Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm
Job Summary: The Medical Lab Assistant prepares accurate lab testing by proper specimen collection and processing. Acts as a representative of the laboratory to the patient, physicians and other clinical staff. Assists in teaching proper techniques in phlebotomy to residents who rotate through the laboratory. Provides general support to the Director of Lab as needed.
Additional Department Summary: Collects blood and non-blood specimens from patients at University Medical Center Lab. Labels and prepares samples by accepted methods for laboratory analysis. Receives and checks in patients. Prints and verifies physician's orders. Explains collection procedures to patients. Escorts patients to/from testing suites. Maintains patient records and medical notes related to lab procedures. Maintains compliance with laboratory and clinical policies and procedures, and safety practices. Keeps work area neat and clean and restocks daily supplies.
Required Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and one (1) year of phlebotomy experience.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Final candidates must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.
Skills and Knowledge: Ability to perform phlebotomy services as directed by lab director, physician, nurse practitioner, or other qualified medical professional. Knowledge of basic medical terminology and lab safety practices. Ability to present information clearly and professionally throughout the patient care process. Knowledge/experience with electronic health record systems. Proficiency in the use of standard computer application software.
Efficient and accurate computer and data entry skills. Ability to multi-task in a fast paced work environment. Desire to exemplify the core values and mission of the organization, always exercising utmost discretion, diplomacy, and tact in patient/staff interactions. Willingness to learn and consistently deliver patient-centered, high-quality customer service. Ability to maintain strict confidentially of protected health information and follow HIPAA regulations at all times. Punctual and reliable, ability to work extended hours as needed during busier clinic times.
Preferred Qualifications: Phlebotomy certification preferred.
