About the Department



The Section of Genetic Medicine continues to shape the future of personalized medicine with successful research programs focused on the quantitative genetic and genomic science. The Section provides extremely valuable collaborations with investigators in the Department of Medicine who are seeking to develop new and more powerful ways to identify genetic risk factors for common, complex disorders with almost immediate clinical application.



Job Summary



The Basu Lab is looking for a Staff Scientist to work on the sample processing, data collection, analysis and interpretation of single cell transcriptome and spatial omics datasets for the Human Gut Cell Atlas, aimed at understanding pathogenesis and disease progression in Crohn's Disease, with a special interest in relapsed inflammation and fibrosis. The Staff Scientist is expected to plan, design, implement and advance the scientific research projects on patient samples and facilitate technical innovation in in vitro organoid culture and characterization. The Staff Scientist is expected to have proficient knowledge in tissue handling, novel single cell and spatial assays and platforms including single cell RNA-seq, single cell ATAC-seq, single cell multiomics, cyclic in situ hybridization.



Responsibilities



  • Conduct single cell experiments and imaging independently.


  • Collaboration within and outside campus are expected.


  • Write scientific research manuscripts, and help prepare grant applications and progress reports.


  • May supervise other research staff in Basu Lab.


  • Present works at scientific meetings, consortium meetings, and departmental seminar.


  • Provide peer review of scientific manuscripts.


  • The individual in this role will be involved in all aspects of the design, development, execution, and analysis of research projects focused on Crohn's Disease.


  • Serves as a resource for collecting data and performing analysis. Facilitates and promotes a research project by providing scientific or intellectual information.


  • Develops laboratory protocols and training on new techniques. Manage, analyze and make recommendations on complex data sets for research.


  • Performs other related work as needed.





Minimum Qualifications




Education:

Minimum requirements include a PhD in related field.

Education:



  • Doctoral degree in Biological Sciences or related field.





Experience:



  • Experience in developing 3D in vitro culture system.


  • Experience with the analysis ofsingle cell and spatial transcriptome data and imaging data.


  • Experience with mentorship and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in research.





Preferred Competencies



  • Knowledge in human gut cell biology and histology.


  • Knowledge and hands-on experience in patient-derived epithelial cell culture and handling.


  • Knowledge and hands-on experience in patient-derived mesenchymal cell culture and handling.


  • Knowledge and hands-on experience of single cell and spatial assays and platform.


  • Knowledge and hands-on experience in droplet microfludics.


  • Knowledge and hands-on experience in advanced imaging required (confocal, super-resolution).


  • Knowledge of HIPPA regulation.


  • Analytical skills in single cell transcriptome and spatial omics.


  • Attention to detail.


  • Organization skills.


  • Problem-solving skill.


  • Verbal and written communication skills.


  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
