Position Purpose:
Installs, services and repairs furnaces, boilers (steam and hot water) and their controls in College facilities. Troubleshoots low pressure boilers, incinerators, and multi-stage boilers. Adheres to annual cleaning and service schedules. Maintains records of furnaces cleaned to the best of ability. Troubleshoots and repairs LP gas appliances and commercial cooking equipment.
Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp:
High School plus 5+ years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Ten years of relevant experience with both oil burners and LP Gas equipment/appliances.
In-depth knowledge of high and low fire burners and controls.
In-depth knowledge of high and low pressure boilers associated with one and two pipe steam distribution systems.
Significant skill in pipefitting, gas fitting, and hydronic heating systems.
Knowledge of the LP gas and oil burner trade including burner controls, proper firing rates, wiring, applicable codes, and safety and environmental regulations.
Current NH/VT LP Gas Certification for installing, cleaning and troubleshooting LP Gas systems.
Proficient troubleshooting skills of LP Gas and Oil fired equipment.
Willingness to work overtime when requested.
Must have a valid drivers license be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
Preferred Qualifications:
Graduate of a technical school with training in oil burner maintenance, preferred.
NH Electrical license preferred, but not required.
High School graduate
Strong customer service orientation.
Strong commitment to a diverse working environment and to serving the needs of a large and diverse community.
Must have successfully completed the following training prior to performing work to which the training relates: Driver Safety; Hazard Communication; Lock-out/Tag-out; Respirator Training; Confined Space, Asbestos, Fall Protection, PPE, Safe Electrical Practices.

Cleans, services, and maintains burners to ensure proper operating efficiency.
Maintains records for furnaces and boilers that were serviced and repaired.
Replaces furnaces and boilers when necessary, including hot water systems designed for specific apartment complexes. Installs burner in furnaces and boilers. Seals space around burner with gasket. Inspects chimneys; installs barometric dampers in chimneys.
Performs series of tests such as pump pressure, transformer, and safety control tests to determine problems. Uses Bacharach kit to determine efficiency. Examines flue draft, using Draft-o-Stat, and changes balance weight to adjust damper.
Assembles and positions oil storage tank between furnace and wall of building. Drills hole in wall and affixes oil inlet and outlet pipes from storage tank through holes to outside of building. Connects pipe to storage tank and burner to convey oil.
Working Conditions
Works from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms.
Work requires bending and kneeling, standing, and climbing and working in stretched, cramped or awkward positions.
Work involves regular lifting and carrying, or holding, objects weighing up to 150 pounds.
Work is performed indoors, outdoors, in bad weather, in areas that are dirty, or smoky and where fumes are present.
Is exposed to cuts and bruises and more serious injuries while working on ladders, scaffolds, etc.
Work involves wearing special or protective clothing such as aprons or Tyvek overalls, gloves, goggles, heating protection and respirator.
Is exposed to hazardous materials such as asbestos.
Working around or near live, pressurized LP gas sources and potential Carbon Monoxide exposure.
