The Senior Accountant works in Business Services under the supervision of the Accounting Manager. The position is responsible for processing financial transactions and preparing financial analyses and reports for campus management, UW System Administration (UWSA), and State of Wisconsin agencies using Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Accountants prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and maintain financial records using the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse's (UWL's) financial systems. Additional responsibilities include proposing process improvements and the implementation of audit recommendations. Candidates will be expected to have a strong understanding of GAAP and will need to acquire knowledge of UWSA and UWL policies and procedures.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance from an accredited institution.
Knowledge of GAAP.
Strong computer skills, specifically proficient in use of Microsoft Excel and Word.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Ability to interact respectfully with people with diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in business from an accredited institution.
CPA eligible.
Experience working with and analyzing automated accounting systems.
Experience interpreting and analyzing financial data from accounting systems to create reports, complete reconciliations or prepare journal entries.
Proficient in the development of computer queries to extract accurate data and reports.
Experience in higher education.
Knowledge of governmental or fund accounting.
