The Associate Director of Media Relations and Leadership Communications leads earned media and leadership communications strategies that advance the mission and impact of the Brown University School of Public Health (SPH). The Associate Director will expand the school's reach, visibility and brand by collaborating with subject matter experts to produce high-quality content in a variety of formats and by engaging with targeted media locally and globally. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Strategic Communications, the Associate Director is a key leader in the School of Public Health's Office of Communications and Events and will work in close collaboration across the communications and events teams to create content that skillfully marshals evidence, narrative, policy relevance and public health significance.
Key responsibilities include:
Leads the earned media strategy for Brown's School of Public Health, including identifying and pitching compelling narratives and story ideas that highlight the school's leadership, expertise and excellence on tackling the big challenges facing human health.
Coordinates closely with the Office of University Communications on earned media outreach to align efforts with institutional strategies and priorities.
Owns the narrative and leads development of communications from school leadership that advance the mission and strategic initiatives of the school.
Creates compelling storytelling content that highlights the impact that SPH students, faculty, alumni and staff are having on human health and wellbeing.
Minimum of seven years of professional research, writing and editing experience.
The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate their ability to lead this critical work and provide evidence of the impact they have had through relevant education and/or experience.
The associate director of media relations and leadership communications should demonstrate the following competencies:
Ability to translate complex research and policy into accessible, clear and compelling language for non-expert audiences.
Demonstrated ability to conduct interviews and engage stakeholders.
Strong writing skills including the flexibility to write in the voice of others.
Proficiency adopting established editorial writing style, such as AP, Chicago or MLA.
Ability to craft compelling narratives and tailor messages that will engage target audiences.
Excellent interpersonal skills, especially an ability to build and maintain trust.
A keen eye for finding the story that is not being told.
Knowledge of, and interest in, research and action that improves the health and well-being of people across the world.
Adept at researching and synthesizing information including reviewing reports, media coverage and audience insights.
Highly collaborative with a willingness and flexibility to help colleagues.
Work in alignment with Brown's policies and protocols relating to visual identity, messaging, image use, usability and accessibility.
Proficiency with word processing software such as microsoft word online or google docs.
