Job Role Summary
The Refrigeration Mechanic, under general supervision, repairs, maintains, designs, installs and modifies refrigeration, related heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment. This position inspects and repairs refrigerators, ice machines, deep freezers, compressor, and condenser in accordance with Hospital policy.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Proactively contributes to Eskenazi Health's mission: Advocate, Care, Teach and Serve with special emphasis on the vulnerable population of Marion County. Models Eskenazi Health values.
Under general supervision, repairs, maintains, designs, installs and modifies refrigeration, related heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment.
Inspects and repairs refrigerators, ice machines, deep freezers, compressor, and condenser in accordance with Hospital policy.
Inspects and adjusts the controls and valves on all air conditioning and ventilation equipment.
Responsible for maintaining charts and records for vital refrigeration and air handling equipment.
Diagnoses faulty equipment and makes necessary repairs.
Locates motors, compressors, evaporators, and other components according to blueprints and specifications.
Connects duct work, refrigerant line and other piping between the systems' components.
Interprets specifications, blueprints and job orders.
Wires in the electrical portion of the equipment to controls and power sources.
Communicates directly with various departments to analyze/resolve functional problems and needs concerning refrigeration and HVAC systems.
Fabricates machine parts and sheet metal by using sheet metal machinery and other related equipment.
Provides heat/loss gain calculations, reads/interprets blueprints, and orders materials as needed.
Evaluates areas which require replacement or expansion of repaired equipment for operability.
Job Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent (GED) preferred.
Completion of a 4-year approved refrigeration apprenticeship program, plus 2 years shop work.
Minimum of 6 years related work experience as a Refrigeration Mechanic may be accepted in lieu of education/training.
On-the-job training provided as determined by the supervisor.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of refrigeration machinery, air conditioning, electrical, plumbing, electronic control systems and their related codes and laws.
Knowledge of all phases of HVAC refrigeration, controls, and mechanical systems.
Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing and related trades.
Knowledge of sheet metal installation, repair, and design.
Ability to:
use age appropriate communication skills
read and interpret blueprints, plans, specifications and related refrigeration,
heating, ventilation and air conditioning drawings
keep accurate and complete records of inspections, and prepare reports for
such records utilizing policies and procedures of the Facilities Department
understand and follow oral and written instructions
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Certifications: Must possess an EPA program approved refrigerant certification (Type I & II).
Knowledge of the Johnson Control Building Management System (Metasys) computer system and associated control devices.
