NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Marin County is the local affiliate of the nation's
largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of
Americans affected by mental illness and their families. NAMI Marin is a volunteer-driven
organization.


Position Summary - Executive Director
We are seeking a strategic leader to further the impact and sustainability of NAMI Marin.
The Executive Director will work closely with the Board of Directors, volunteers, a small staff
and/or consultants and community stakeholders to advance the mission of the organization,
ensuring financial sustainability, program reach and effectiveness.
The ideal candidate will be deeply committed to our mission, have demonstrated success in
nonprofit administration and the ability to inspire and lead a largely volunteer-driven
organization.


The position requires a versatile leader with exceptional communication and interpersonal skills,
and the ability to lead and implement development and fundraising efforts that ensure financial
sustainability. The Executive Director will be adept at program oversight, and at fostering
community partnerships and volunteer engagement.

Key Responsibilities:
Leadership and Management
Provide strategic direction and leadership to the organization, ensuring alignment with its
mission and values. Partner with the Board to set priorities and co-create long-term
strategies, guiding the organization's growth and sustainability.
Oversee all aspects of administration and day-to-day operations, ensuring effective use
of resources and adherence to policies, and legal/regulatory requirements. Maintain
accurate records and documentation for organizational operations and funding.
Foster a positive, inclusive, and collaborative organizational culture that empowers
volunteers and maximizes their contributions.

Work within organization budget on efficient and strategic use of consultants and/or staff
positions to extend organizational capacities (e.g., IT, communications/marketing,
finance, administrative support).
Provide management of staff, consultants and contractors, including requirements of
staff hiring, separations, and compliance with local, state and federal regulations.
Fund Development and Financial Management
Develop and implement a diversified fundraising strategy to support the organization's
programs and operations. Lead fundraising initiatives, including donor development,
corporate sponsorships, grant writing, and fundraising events.
Cultivate relationships with donors, community partners, and grant-making
organizations.
Provide and/or oversee grant writing, management and reporting, ensuring compliance
with funder requirements and deadlines.
Prepare and manage the annual budget in collaboration with the Board of Directors.
Monitor financial performance and ensure the organization's fiscal health. Provide
regular financial reports to the Board, including cash flow statements and budget
updates.


Board Relations
Support and collaborate with the Board of Directors in governance, strategic planning
and policy development.
Provide necessary information and reports to facilitate informed decision-making by the
Board, including regular updates and reports to the Board on organizational
performance, finances, and program impact.
Assist in the recruitment and orientation of new Board members and in board
development.


Volunteer Leadership
Empower volunteers by providing a range of opportunities that meet both organizational
needs and the interests and abilities of volunteers.
Oversee and/or lead the recruitment, onboarding, training and recognition of volunteers
and facilitators, ensuring high-quality program delivery.
Program Development and Evaluation
Oversee and/or lead the design, implementation, and evaluation of programs that align
with community needs and the organization's mission.

Utilize feedback and data to continuously improve program effectiveness and make
data-driven recommendations for new programs or improvement. Track program goals
and outcomes.
Community Engagement and Advocacy
Serve as one of the primary spokespersons for the organization, representing and
advocating for the mission, values, and populations served. Engage in proactive
community outreach.
Cultivate and maintain partnerships with community organizations, businesses,
government entities, media and other key sponsors, stakeholders, funders and donors.
Facilitate NAMI in developing and managing an effective communications strategy,
including print, media, PR, social media, and web content.

Qualifications - Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


Bachelor's degree in nonprofit management, business administration, or a related field;
advanced degree preferred.
Deep commitment to the mission of NAMI Marin.
Minimum 6 years of experience in nonprofit leadership and administration, including
knowledge of budgeting and fiscal management, nonprofit board governance and
regulatory compliance. Experience in the field of mental health preferred.
Solid experience, skills and success in fundraising strategies, including major gifts,
donor relations, annual giving campaigns, events, and in grant writing and restricted
grant management oversight.
Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communications, and public speaking skills.
Proven ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups and to inspire and mobilize
volunteers.
Experience in co-creating and implementing strategic plans in collaboration with Boards
or similar governing bodies, with experience collaborating with Boards to secure budget
approvals and align financial practices with strategic priorities.
A collaborative leadership style with a thoughtful and strategic approach to
organizational leadership and management.
Technological proficiency with current tools, and with social media, web, and marketing
tools/strategies preferred.
Flexibility to participate in activities, events or meetings during occasional evenings and
weekends as needed. CA Driver's License and familiarity with County of Marin. Ability to
travel among various sites in Marin County as needed.
