The Opportunity:
Washington State University is seeking a dynamic leader to serve as the Assistant or Associate Vice Provost for Tribal Research and Graduate Education (title to be determined based on qualifications). You will lead the Center for Native American Research and Collaboration (CNRC) and report to the Vice Provost for Native American Relations and Programs and Tribal Liaison to the President.
You will advance Tribal engaged and collaborative research, joint project initiatives, and graduate education that embeds Tribal Nation Building principles. The CNRC provides training, consulting, and opportunities for faculty, staff, and graduate students to connect with Northwest regional Tribal priorities and research initiatives. Additionally, the CNRC supports WSU's Office of Tribal Relations by offering consulting and training to understand and apply Executive Policy 41 on Tribal Engagement, Consultation, and Consent.
This role is crucial in providing faculty and graduate student consultation on tribal research, priorities, and protocols. The CNRC is dedicated to Native American student graduate education and support services, as well as fostering relationships with Tribal Colleges. Therefore, the position will also emphasize deepening joint initiatives and partnerships with regional Tribal Colleges to ensure equity and reciprocity.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
1. Supervision and Leadership:
Supervise the Assistant Director for the CNRC, providing guidance, support, and oversight.
Approve vacation and sick leave using the Workday system.
Direct and guide the vision of the CNRC as a service center to WSU, ensuring it embodies Tribal Nation Building principles, Executive Policy 41 and fiscal sustainability.
Foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment, encouraging professional growth and development.
Lead strategic planning initiatives to advance the CNRC's mission and goals in collaboration with the Vice Provost for Native American Relations and Programs.
Manage and work closely with Co-Director to oversee the CNRC faculty, staff, and Tribal affiliates program. Currently, there are 83 faculty, staff, and Tribal affiliates.
Oversee all administrative duties and responsibilities of the Center for Native American Research and Collaboration.
2. Tribal Research, Consultation, Education, and Initiatives:
Assist the Vice Provost and Tribal Liaison to the President in the strategic planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of priority initiatives and programs arising from WSU's Native American Advisory Board and other Tribal consultation forums.
Plan and host the annual Indigenous Research Conference and/or meetings, bringing together scholars, Tribal leaders, and community members to discuss Indigenous research.
Assist the Vice Provost and Tribal Liaison to the President in planning and conducting ongoing training on Executive Policy 41 and creating supplementary resources, including topics on tribal and data sovereignty, MOU/MOA agreements, and Indigenous literature reviews.
Assist in coordinating Tribal speakers to co-present on EP41 trainings.
Review and provide consultation on projects, research, and grant initiatives to ensure alignment with Executive Policy 41. Coordinate with the Office of Tribal Relations to facilitate necessary introductions between project leads and Tribal departments, leaders, and governments, where necessary on these projects.
Highlight and address the research needs of Tribal communities through collaborative projects, consultation, and presentations.
Led the development of a database for all Executive Policy 41 and CNRC consultations, outreach, and joint initiatives with appropriate university partners.
Highlight and communicate the CNRC work through reporting, newsletters, or other creative media tools to keep Tribal and external and internal partners informed.
3. Grant Writing and Management:
Work with the CNRC to submit proposals and manage federal and non-federal grants that advance Tribal and WSU priorities in Native American student pathways, retention, workforce development, and Tribal Nation Building.
Assist in collaborating with the Institutional Review Board to ensure that policies and practices are aligned with Executive Policy 41. Inform their checklist and review practices for research conducted with Tribes and Native American people, and review IRB proposals where necessary.
Assist in working and coordinating with the Office of Research on their new check box for grant projects that include Tribal Nations, peoples, land, culture, or language. This includes maintaining a database on all new grant proposals, and delegating tasks among the CNRC staff to provide a brief review of grant proposals and/or meeting with principal investigators to ensure alignment with EP41.
4. Partnerships and Graduate Education Support:
Build collaborations, partnerships, and Native student pathways with regional Tribal colleges, such as Salish Kootenai College and Northwest Indian College. Develop graduate programs and joint research partnerships that promote equitable partnerships and pathways that mutually support Native American students and Tribal sovereignty.
Collaborate and advise Institutional Research and Enrollment to properly collect, analyze, and report on Native American student identification. Conduct research to improve strategies for Native graduate student recruitment and retention, informing WSU practices.
Mentor and include Native graduate students in collaborative research and projects with Tribes and publications, providing them with workforce training and professional development opportunities.
Work with WSU leadership to recruit, support, and retain Native American faculty and researchers. Review position descriptions, serve on hiring committees, meet with candidates, and mentor hired Native faculty and staff.
Organize professional development and relationship-building activities for Native American staff and faculty across the WSU system to improve retention.
Maintain a database of all Native American graduate students, outreach, and advising services.
Required Qualifications:
Doctoral degree from an accredited institution.
Minimum of 2 years of experience in higher education administration and leadership, including program development, strategic planning, and implementation.
Proven track record of collaborative research with Tribal communities
Exceptional communication interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Extensive knowledge of and respect for Tribal cultures, values, and knowledge systems
Experience in grant writing and management, including securing, administering, and reporting on grants for research, education, or community-dissemination.
Experience in supporting Native American graduate education
Ability to advocate effectively for Tribal research and education within the academic and broader community
Knowledge of federal, state, and institutional policies relevant to Tribal sovereignty, consultation, and data sovereignty.

Annual Salary Range:
Assistant Vice Provost Annual: $100,000 - $110,000
Associate Vice Provost Annual: $100,000 - $120,000
In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

emporary, renewable position. This 3-year term position is eligible for re-appointment with satisfactory performance reports.
