Position Summary

The MSU College of Nursing invites applications for teaching faculty positions to teach in our Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Graduate Program. These are benefit-eligible, annual year (12 month) faculty positions. The College of Nursing promotes the health of individuals and communities through excellent educational programs to prepare nurse leaders for practice, research, and education. Collaboration with College of Nursing faculty, administrators, agency staff and students will be expected. Assignments are based in East Lansing, Michigan. These positions will work closely with the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Program Director in areas related to curriculum development as well as program and student evaluations. Additional areas of responsibility include mentoring underrepresented students to support their academic and professional development, as well as faculty development opportunities that align with DEI practices, and APNA and AACN guidelines for fostering inclusive academic environments.


Position responsibilities include but are not limited to:



  • Course management, didactic and skills lab instruction for the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Graduate Program include but is not limited to:

    • Delivering the following course content topics:

      • Psychopharmacology and neuropathological basis of mental illness

      • Clinical Diagnosis & Management - Psychiatric Assessment and Diagnosis

      • Clinical Diagnosis & Management - Evidence Based Therapeutic Interventions

      • Clinical Diagnosis & Management - Special Populations and Group

      • Clinical Management - Complex and Collaborative Mental Health Care



    • Incorporating evidence-based teaching strategies and technology-enhanced learning tools that align with AACN's emphasis on innovative education.

    • Align simulation-based education with AACN recommendations for advanced competency-based nursing education.

    • Instructing graduate students through online, hybrid and/or in person instruction



  • Using various assessment techniques in addition to test writing and in-course student performance analysis such as OSCEs (objective structured clinical examinations), formative, summative, or practical assessments

  • Participating in outreach and diversity recruitment initiatives, aligning with APNA and AACN's focus on diversity, equity and inclusion in nursing education.

  • Participating in holistic admissions, to align with and advance AACN's diversity and inclusion goals.

  • Assisting with clinical placements, clinical maintenance, and clinical student case management. Specifics include but are not limited to:

    • Clinical Site Development: develop and maintain clinical site partnerships and preceptor relationships, crucial for AACN's clinical practice standards.

    • Clinical Supervision: oversee student clinical hours, evaluate clinical competence, and ensure alignment with NONPF core competencies.



  • Provides student advisement, mentorship for student career development and preparation for certification examination.

  • Participating in the accreditation and program assessment, including but not limited to continuous quality improvement initiatives for program evaluation and accreditation processes that align with NONPF standards

Required Degree

Doctorate -in Nursing

Minimum Requirements

  • Doctoral degree (PhD, DNP, DNAP or equivalent)

  • National certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (or eligible)

  • Unrestricted RN license without probationary status (or eligible)

  • Recent and relevant clinical practice experience in psychiatric mental health

  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience in specialty areas within mental health care such as child, adolescent, substance use, geriatric, etc.

Desired Qualifications

  • Previous teaching experience in higher education
