Primary Job Purpose:
To assure the daily needs of neighbors under their care are provided for, including safely administering medications and treatments and providing supervision, assistance and assignments for the CNA Care Specialists.
Essential Job Functions:
Practice the Values, the Mission, and Philosophy of Eben Ezer Lutheran Care Center.
Participates actively in neighbor care planning, noting needed changes.
Assumes responsibility for accurate observation, recording and reporting to the appropriate persons the symptoms, reactions and progress of neighbors assigned to their care.
Supervises and assists in the care given by auxiliary personnel.
Promptly informs the DON or nurse supervisor of any problems concerning the health or safety of neighbors or staff under their supervision.
Makes regular rounds on all neighbors under her care at the beginning and end of the shift and throughout the day per neighbors’ needs.
Administers prescribed medications and treatment in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act, with an understanding of the nursing implications (drug actions, interactions, adverse effects, etc.,) in terms of patient diagnosis.
Orders needed medications from the pharmacy, or obtains them from the ADS (automatic dispensing system).
Safeguards and administers drugs in accordance with the law and with established policies.
Assists with the orientation and training of new personnel.
Administers IV medications on assigned neighborhood or on other neighborhoods when needed to assist LPN on duty.
Assumes responsibility for personal and professional growth.
Assists with periodic evaluation of auxiliary personnel.
Recognizes legal implications and responsibilities in regard to the practice of nursing.
Maintains a safe, comfortable, and pleasant environment within the department by encouraging adherence to established standards, policies and procedures, maintaining orderliness of the neighborhood, and fostering cooperation with other departments.
Delegates only those duties which can be legally or safely delegated to others.
Accepts responsibility for own actions and determines one’s competency for performing duties in the scope of one’s practice.
Maintains confidentiality of all work related information according to HIPAA regulations.
Demonstrates proficiency in using computers for clinical documentation.
Responsible for replacing staff call-ins during the evening & night shift.
Assures tasks are completed and equipment is in working condition and in compliance with recognized standards. This includes removal of expired and discontinued medications from the med room.
Ensures CNA “side work” (e.g. wheelchair cleaning, replacing of toothbrushes & personal items, comb & brush cleaning, etc) is completed.
Assures medication storage and refrigerator temperatures are within normal limits as regularly scheduled.
In addition to the responsibilities described above, the role may include other responsibilities and duties as assigned on occasion, based upon Eben Ezer needs or requirements.
Non-Essential Job Functions:
May participate in Eben Ezer committees.
Will attend meetings and inservices as instructed.
Material and Equipment used but not limited to:
Equipment associate with patient care such as lifts, tubs, wheelchairs, gait belts, specialty beds, blood pressure cuff, pulse oximeters, glucometers, etc.
Use of telephone, call bell paging system.
Working Environment/Physical Activities:
Must be able to push/pull up to 250 pounds regularly using a wheelchair. Must be able to lift 0-50 pounds regularly by self and 50+ pounds occasionally with assistance.
Frequently walks, stands, bends, lifts, pushes.
Employee will be working in a busy clinical environment which includes being on feet up to 90% of the shift.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather).
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to blood born pathogens; works near moving mechanical parts.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Working Hours:
As scheduled by the Director of Nursing and which may include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and Experience:
Graduate of approved Licensed or Registered Nursing School, with a current license to practice in the state of Colorado. Able to supervise care given by nurse aides, and has the bedside nursing skills needed to provide quality care. Understands the Eden Alternative Principles and is able to lead others in implementing person-directed care.
Other Skills and Abilities:
Ability to manage time and resources effectively.
Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers
Maintain punctuality when reporting to work and leaving work.
Must demonstrate the willingness and ability to learn and perform all duties required by the Nursing Department.
Ability to work and converse in a polite manner with residents, their families, co-workers, and others associated with the position on a daily basis.
Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions
Must be able to follow safety measures to protect neighbors, self, and co-workers.
Work Location: This is not a remote position and work must be performed in-person.
