JOB SUMMARY:
Under supervision of the registered nurse, provides direct nursing care for infant through geriatric patients on the medical/surgical units by instituting the minimum standard of care (MSOC).
MAJOR JOB FUNCTION:
1. Provides for patient’s personal hygiene.
a. Gives bedpans, urinals, baths, backrubs, shampoos, shaves and assists with showers.
2. Provides for activities of daily living.
a. Assists with meals and feeds patients.
b. Ambulates, turns and positions patients.
c. Provides fresh water and nourishment between meals.
3. Administers enemas, douches, nonsterile dressings, surgical preps, ice packs, heat treatments and sitz and therapeutic baths.
4. Performs I&O.
a. Checks vital signs and weight.
b. Performs sugar and acetone urine testing, specimen collection and post-mortem care.
5. Provides for comfort needs of patients.
6. Works effectively as a team member in the delivery of care and assists in the orientation of new employees.
7. Utilizes resources and materials in an efficient and safe manner.
8. Maintains a safe and attractive environment for patients and co-workers; transports patients and equipment as appropriate.
9. Promptly answers patients’ call lights and requests.
10. Reports observations of a patient to the nurse caring for the patient to ensure professional assessment.
a. Coordinates ongoing assessment of the patient with staff RN according to developed age related standards of care.
b. Documents on appropriate flow sheets within specified time frame.
c. Documentation is accurate and complete according to standards.
d. Assists in evaluation of effectiveness plan of care and patient’s physical and emotional response to teaching and nursing interventions.
11. Instills confidence in the patient by maintaining a neat and attractive appearance and performing duties in a competent and caring manner.
a. Interacts effectively with patients both through oral and written communication using appropriate verbal and non-verbal behavior to reinforce the content of the message.
b. Respects patient need for privacy, explains cares to patient, and treats patient as an individual with dignity.
12. Shows dependability by being punctual; maintains consistent attendance.
a. Attends staff meetings at least 50% of time. Reads and initials all meeting minutes of those not in attendance.
13. Maintains a good working relationship among all nursing unit personnel and other hospital employees through appropriate communication.
a. Willing to identify problems and participate in problem solving process.
b. Demonstrates the ability to evaluate suggestions and criticism objectively.
14. In specialized areas, performs duties as defined on a specialized skill list.
a. With specialized training, may perform additional and specialized tasks pertinent to assigned area.

15. Demonstrates proficiency in regards to the computer documentation of patient cares and any other related computerized patient information/documentation.
16. Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
1. High school diploma or equivalent required.
2. Successful completion of Certified Nursing Assistant program and listed as current and active on the WI Nurse Aide Registry.

3. Previous hospital experience preferred.
4. Current certification or eligibility to become BLS certified.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
1. Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, and talk and hear.
2. The CNA is frequently required to stand, walk and reach with hands and arms. The CNA is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel or crouch, and smell.
3. The CNA must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
4. Good hearing is necessary to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make fine discriminations in sound.
5. Visual acuity is needed to assess color changes, to verify accuracy of written materials.
6. Computer/keyboard skills required. Must have the ability to operate in a Windows environment.
