About the Program



The College Board Assessment Leadership Program is a two-year program designed to train the next generation of assessment leaders and specialists in education. You will join an inaugural class of Assessment Fellows in a two-year fellowship program at the premier assessment organization in the country. Through this program, Fellows will develop skills in all aspects of assessment design.


The Advanced Placement (AP) Curriculum and Assessment Team (80+ staff) supports College Board in serving more than seven million students a year as they prepare for a successful transition to college through programs and services in college readiness and college success - specifically through the AP Program. AP provides willing and academically prepared high school students with the opportunity to study and learn at the college level. With more than 40+ courses in a wide variety of subject areas, we are committed to promoting innovation, equity, and excellence for generations of students.


AP's Curriculum and Assessment team ensures that course curricula are aligned to higher education expectations and reflect the state of the art in the discipline, contribute to instructional resources and tools for teachers, and develop assessments that allow students in these courses to demonstrate their mastery of course content and skills.


Assessment Fellows are full-time, paid employees and are eligible for College Board benefits, including health insurance, retirement contributions, and tuition assistance. The position is remote and reports to Senior Director, AP Curriculum and Assessment for the duration of the one-year fellowship term with a second-year renewal option.


Fellows in other College Board departments of have gone on to pursue leadership roles at mission-driven organizations, like Guild Education, the Gates Foundation, Mathematica, Education Trust, and Jack Kent Cooke Foundation as well as to high impact roles within the College Board.



About the Team



The Assessment Fellow, AP Physics will be directly managed and supported by the Senior Director of AP Curriculum and Assessment, who is responsible for managing the AP Assessment Fellow Program. Additionally, the Assessment Fellow will contribute to and be supported by the College Board's Science department, which includes Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, Environmental Science, Anatomy and Physiology, and Research, is currently made up of 20 people supporting 10 courses in the AP portfolio.



About the Opportunity



The Curriculum and Assessment Department prioritizes coaching and development - you will receive significant opportunities for challenge and growth from an experienced manager on the AP Curriculum and Assessment team. Your experience includes:





  • Formal training program with session-based practice going through all phases of assessment development process as well as formal leadership programming on management of self, and team/relationship skill development







  • Coaching and mentorship You will be coached by multiple staff members (managers, department heads, and Executive Director of Assessment) who have worked for a variety of assessment organizations.







  • Practical skill development You will serve on a team to directly support item authoring and development, and exam form assembly for one or more specific AP exams aligned with your professional training and experience. You will be part of a department of content experts in your content area of expertise.







  • Exposure to senior leadership with opportunities to learn about various parts of the education sector and College Board Programs.







  • Exposure and networking with staff, including thosewho share aspects of identity.




In this role, you will:




  • Learn about item development and management from authoring to administration






  • Support training and collaboration with subject-matter experts (SMEs), typically college professors and secondary school teachers on how to author assessment content






  • Understand assessment development protocols, translation between academics and technical experts (psychometricians), and the development of formative assessment materials and resources






  • Learn how to select appropriate stimulus material and apply best assessment practices.






  • Support the development and management of all assessment content through iterative review stages with multiple internal and external stakeholders






  • Understand AP Exam development and alignment with approved curricula and test specifications.






  • Support Development Committee meetings and understand how to engage and support these meetings within a discipline.






  • Attend and support the scoring of student AP Exams at the annual scoring event in person and online through the AP Reading






  • Contribute to learning and best practices related to assessment by participating in regular discussions with other AP Curriculum & Assessment staff members on the current assessment standards and practices to build a set of common, shared beliefs about AP's assessment directions within the larger educational and assessment community.






  • Contribute to processes for efficient, high quality assessment development.





About You



You have:




  • (Required) Masters degree in Physics or a related field, and knowledge of current trends in the discipline, although a doctorate in the discipline is strongly preferred






  • 3+ years professional experience post-college






  • Emerging interest and ability in assessment and curriculum design






  • Experience developing assessments or curriculum for own classroom






  • Strong commitment to excellence and personal and professional growth






  • Resourceful, intellectually curious, empathetic






  • Highly effective at building relationships across lines of difference






  • Superior oral and written communications skills






  • Excellent organizational and planning skills, including the ability to effectively handle multiple tasks simultaneously






  • Meticulous attention to detail, including the ability to closely proofread






  • Excellent skills in process and procedure implementation, including adhering to project plans and schedules, and maintaining project management documentation for tracking






  • Technical acumen and aptitude; proficiency with Microsoft Office and use of browser-based applications and tools






  • Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills, including the ability to collaborate with staff at all levels






  • Willingness to give, accept, and address constructive feedback with positivity






  • Contributes to a culture of timely and kind feedback, displaying openness to new ideas, approaches, and growth

  • Willingness to travel up to 6 times a year (domestic), with an additional 2 weeks in May/June for the Annual "AP Reading"

  • We believe in compensating staff members fairly in relation to each other, their qualifications, and their impact. The salary range for a new employee in this position is $56,000 to $95,000. The salary offer of an individual candidate within this range is specific to their location and qualifications.
