Job Description:

The School of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SSBS) in the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University (ASU) invites applications for a tenure-track professor (open rank) in communication with a focus on science or risk communication. The preferred candidate will have expertise in areas such as science, health, risk, and/or environmental communication, broadly defined. Maintaining an active program of research and publication is required. Interest in, and potential for, multi-disciplinary collaboration and the pursuit of external funding are preferred.

The successful candidate will be expected to engage in student mentorship and teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The chosen applicant must be able to contribute to existing teaching needs, both online and in person. There may also be opportunities to develop new courses in their area of expertise. A typical course load for a tenure-track professor with an active research agenda istwo courses per semester. The successful candidate will be expected to actively engage in service roles that further the success and reputation of the program, School, College, and University, while advancing ASUs charter.

Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Primarily teach courses in person, in relevant areas. There may be subsequent opportunities for online/ hybrid courses depending on need and approval

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or terminal degree in Communication or related field at time of hire
  • To be considered for an Associate or Full Professor position, the candidate must meet the criteria for tenure and promotion at Arizona State University

Desired Qualifications:

  • An ongoing program of research and publication relevant to science or risk communication, appropriate to the candidate's rank of experience
  • Experience with or potential for pursuing external research funding
  • Expertise in social science research methods
  • Experience teaching in communication, media, or related areas
  • Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with students from a wide variety of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, including first-generation college students
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness e.g., student evaluations, syllabi, peer observation, annual evaluations, etc.
  • Commitment to working collaboratively with faculty and administration to advance the program

Teaching/Student evaluations may be required at time of interview.
