Job Description:

The University of Washington's William E. Boeing Department of Aeronautics & Astronautics (A&A) invites applications for a full-time Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor position. Assistant/Associate Teaching Professors are non-tenured faculty members who are hired on multi-year appointments with a 9-month service period (September 16 through June 15) that may allow for additional opportunities to teach during the summer. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2025 with an initial appointment period of 3 years.

The new Assistant/Associate Teaching Professor will join the Faculty primarily to support project-based and laboratory learning at the Junior, Senior, and graduate student levels. These classes utilize rigorous test procedures and test plans to teach A&A standards and follow the established A&A Systems Engineering process. The successful candidate will guide students through the A&A laboratory experience, including instruction of laboratory techniques, statistical analysis of empirical data, written and oral communications skills, and review of introductory level materials on thermo dynamics, structures, aeronautics, and controls. This position will have strong collaboration amongst the range of aerospace subject areas with experimental, multidisciplinary, and interdisciplinary learning.

UW faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. Teaching Professors at UW are primarily evaluated with regard to their teaching and service. In this context the successful candidate will be expected to pursue pedagogy research at the department, including participation in professional societies and publication in relevant journals, and sharing new techniques with the rest of the faculty. From the research perspective, the successful candidate will be encouraged to participate in the wide-range of activities within our concentration areas of: controls and autonomous systems, fluids, plasma science and space systems, and materials and structures. Research collaboration is encouraged within the department, the College of Engineering, and across the 3 UW Campuses. We also routinely engage in research projects with affiliates from the region's noted high-tech industry. Educational and manufacturing activities at UW A&A, including the Junior laboratory sequence, are supported by a full-time instructional lab manager, as well as departmental IT and facilities support.

In summary, a successful candidate will:

  • Teach laboratory and project-based classes
  • Teach A&A design processes and methodology
  • Update and create curriculum materials for these classes
  • Help advance pedagogy practices at the A&A department
  • Work in a multi-disciplinary environment
  • Mentor student teams
  • Maintain communications with other faculty and department leadership
  • Support the department during the ABET review process
  • Support the department's commitment to diversity and inclusion

The base salary range for this position will be $14,000.00 to $20,000 per month (with a nine-month service period), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Other compensation associated with this position may include a one-time relocation incentive.

Qualifications

PhD or foreign equivalent in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
Minimum 2 years experience (inclusive of graduate school) in a leadership position within a multidisciplinary A&A project. In lieu of this experience, curriculum development for at least one laboratory and/or project-based course is also acceptable.
