Job Description:
ECS is seeking an ontologist, experienced at evaluating data and working with subject matter experts to convert models to formal semantic expressions. This role is responsible for designing and developing ontologies to capture and represent domain-specific knowledge and relationships.
Additionally, the ontologist collaborates with customers, often engaging directly with non-technical stakeholders, to understand their data-related needs, suggest solutions, and produce solutions in a timely manner. This position performs activities associated with implementation, integration, and support of computer systems in mission-critical response operations environment, in the effort to deliver innovative and complex data solutions and visualizations to DHS users.
Responsibilities will include:
Designing, developing, and implementing semantic frameworks, and supporting their maintenance.
Collaborating with technical and non-technical teams by leveraging customer insights to influence priorities, propose standards and guidelines, and inform client strategies for ontology, data modeling, semantics and data standardization.
Analyzing and implementing knowledge organization strategies using tools capable of machine learning and semantic enrichment.
Developing processes and tools to establish, maintain, and update ontology, taxonomy, and other data models, while observing industry standards and best practices.
Conducting tests and troubleshooting new or updated models, systems and solutions.
Informing and advising clients, and both technical and non-technical teams about industry best practices related to Ontology, ultimately supporting the implementation of data standardization and ontology governance strategies and processes.
Salary Range: $160,000 - $190,000

Ability to gain DHS Public Trust.
Minimum of seven (7) years' experience in design, analysis, and implementation of information systems architecture.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Science, Library Science, Ontology, Semantics or Computational Linguistics.
Desired Skills:
Trained in ontological development, possessing experience with metadata field of work and W3C standards including linked and canonical data and ontologies (JSON, XML, RDF, RDFS, OWL, and SKOS).
Has a strong understanding of both semantic term sets and the role of Ontology or taxonomies in data normalization.
Experienced with data modeling or related analytical skills.
A passion for information and knowledge modeling, and a desire to learn new domains of knowledge in a fast-paced environment.
Experienced with or trained to use linked data tools (Protégé, TopQuadrant, PoolParty, Stardog, AnzoGraph, Neptune, or Data.World).
Experienced with or trained to use SQL or SPARQL.
Experience in python, reactjs, and typescript.
Experience working with graph database(s).
Experience working in an Agile environment and familiarity with Agile principles, processes, and methodologies.
Advanced academic degree such as a Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Science, Library Science, Ontology, Semantics or Computational Linguistics preferred.
Possesses strong interpersonal communication skills and experience engaging with stakeholders at all levels, both technical and non-technical.
Ability to collaborate cross-functionally with data scientists, business users, project managers and other engineers to achieve solutions.
