Cytometry Core Lab Staff Scientist
JOB SUMMARY
We are seeking a highly skilled and enthusiastic Flow Cytometry Core Lab Staff Scientist at BD Biosciences (BDB) in Milpitas. The qualified candidate will lead day-to-day operations to support a shared resource flow cytometry laboratory. This is a key role within R&D and is part of a broader cross-site Core Technologies Team that also encompasses a San Diego based Cytometry Core Lab and an Automation Core Lab. This position requires a strong biological sciences background and extensive experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting BD cytometer instrumentation. Additionally, the candidate must possess well demonstrated expertise in flow cytometry instrument set-up and optimization, instrument characterization methods, QC methods, and knowledge of a wide range of flow cytometry applications. Practical knowledge of cell sorting and demonstrated expertise in educational course development and training is required. This position will collaborate to support the strategic link between BD cytometer instrumentation and the San Diego based research and clinical reagents product portfolio. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
THE QUALIFIED CANDIDATE WILL:
Ensure Core Lab space safety and standard process guidelines are adhered to.
Perform daily QC, scheduled (basic) maintenance, and first-line troubleshooting.
Monitor trends in instrument QC reports to proactively identify instrument issues before they become failures.
Drive for maximum instrument uptime through oversight of the following BD platforms: FACSymphony, FACSCelesta, FACSCanto, FACSLyric & FACSDuet, FACSAria, FACSMelody, FACSDiscover.
Complete instrument assessment and comparison studies to benchmark BD early development and prototype instruments.
Collaborate with the San Diego based Cytometry Core Lab to provide and refine best-in-class cytometry theory and instrument operation training.
Use expertise to provide guidance on multicolor panel design and spectral cytometry.
Support critical project sorting requests and train clients to independently operate cell sorters for routine sorting needs.
Collaborate cross-site to standardize instrument settings where appropriate.
Enforce data management and file organization standard processes and collaborate to establish a centralized and searchable cross-site data repository.
Collate monthly metrics to summarize and report out instrument and usage trends.
Increase efficiencies by helping scientists to automate, miniaturize, or improve standard assays through cross-team collaboration, or introduction of innovative techniques.
EXPANSION AND SCULPTING OF ROLE:
Contribute to and align cross-site to expand company-wide cytometry educational efforts.
Contribute to ongoing instrument characterization and optimization efforts.
Integrate sorting and single cell genomic workflows.
Provide a critical user perspective in development of next generation reagents, instruments, software, and workflow solutions.
Expand knowledge on Core Lab instrumentation and the competitive landscape.
Keep current on cytometry principles and technologies.
Knowledge of advanced flow cytometry analyzer and FACS principles.
A wide variety of flow cytometry platforms and application experience.
Extensive biological background that enables contributing to commercial use evaluations, data generation, system comparisons, and quality assessments.
Previous experience operating cell sorters for bulk and index sorting.
Strength with analytical and technical problem-solving.
Teammate with ability to work independently.
Must possess strong interpersonal skills.
Ability to explain complex topics in straightforward terminology.
EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Strong external scientific reputation including publications, presentations at scientific meetings, membership on (or leading) cross-company working groups or consortia.
Applicants must have a current knowledge of flow cytometry, immunology, and cell-based assays.
Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences.
Minimum of 15 years of experience in a clinical research setting, clinical/ diagnostic laboratory, or a pharmaceutical/ biotechnology R&D environment.
Minimum of 15 years of experience operating flow cytometer instrumentation.
