Epsilon Systems Solutions, Inc. is currently seeking a full-time Outside Machinist Specialist in National City, CA.

Summary: Repair, modify or overhaul various types of equipment or systems. Set up and operate portable machining tools or equipment. Install new machines or heavy equipment according to layout plans, blueprints, or other drawings, and dismantles and installs machines or heavy equipment when changes in the plant layout are required. Will provide guidance and training to lower level craftsmen as requested. Non-supervisory.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Requires no supervision and is an expert in all tasks required as an Outside Machinist.

  • Follow detailed repair procedures and instructions (e.g.; QA Workbooks, Work packages steps, RECs, CWPs, FWPs, TGIs etc.) required to complete the production operation.

  • Coordinating the efforts of other trades during an installation, modification or repair operation. Perform component and/or system troubleshooting to diagnose the problem and provide most cost-effective recommendation for completing repairs. Perform and/or verify mechanical alignments.

  • Perform installation, repair, overhaul or modification in place or in shop to mechanical systems and components (e.g.; Valves, Actuators, Cylinders, Accumulators, Pumps, Launchers etc.).

  • Perform component and/or system troubleshooting to diagnose problems. Assist with the performance of on-site field service for system grooms and checkouts, minor repairs and system configuration validation.

  • Prepare and install equipment or system alterations (e.g.; TEMPALTs, SHIPALTs, ORDALTs, etc.) IAW the directives (i.e.; instructions, drawings, MILSPECs, etc.).

  • Replace defective parts of machine or adjust clearances and alignment of moving parts.

  • Aligns machines and equipment, using hoists, jacks, hand tools, squares, rules, micrometers, and various electrical/electronic equipment.

  • Connects power unit to machines or steam piping to equipment, and test unit to evaluate its mechanical operation.

  • Repairs and lubricates machines and equipment.

  • Assembles and installs equipment, using hand tools and power tools.

  • Positions steel beams to support bedplates of machines and equipment, using blueprints and schematic drawings, to determine work procedures.

  • Signals crane operator to lower basic assembly units to bedplate, and align unit to centerline.

  • Inserts shims, adjust tension on nuts and bolts, or position parts, using hand tools and measuring instruments, to set specified clearances between moving and stationary parts.

  • Moves machinery and equipment, using hoists, dollies, rollers, and trucks.

  • Attaches moving parts and subassemblies to basic assembly unit, using hand tools and power tools.

  • Supports other trades as required to include assisting in rigging, disassembly, reassembly and inspection of mechanical and electrical equipment, systems, and components.

  • Strict adherence to corporate, federal, state and local safety regulations prior to setting up or operating any machinery.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School/GED with Apprenticeship Diploma and additional vocational courses or technical school graduate; and/or military and/or civilian experience with marine mechanical systems in a repair department or shipyard. Knowledge and practical skills tests may be required.

  • More than 8 years related work experience.

  • Will be able to understand and perform the set-up, alignment, and operation of various portable tools and hand tools used in the trade as well as the ability to use all precision measuring instruments as height gauges, depth gauges, calipers, veneers, lay-out tools, tachometers, thermometers, vibration indicators and possess the ability to accurately record readings and measurements as well as complete documentation, repair, and testing of equipment.

  • Must possess a basic understanding of the English language in order to read, write, complete, and comprehend instructions, blueprints, and other work documents.

  • Must have the ability to interpret and work from complex blueprints, sketches and specifications, and have experience in the disassembly, repair, installation, testing and inspection of ship machinery such as, but not limited to, propelling machinery, pumps, valves, launchers, discharge machinery, ventilation equipment, steering gear, evaporators, heaters, condensers, propulsion plants, torpedo tubes, shutter doors, antennae mast mechanical groups.

  • Must have knowledge of rigging equipment and be able to identify damaged and/or worn equipment. Must be able to lead rigging teams in medium to larger rigging tasks.

  • Able to obtain and maintain access to military and government installations and private shipyards worldwide.

Pay Range:

The pay range for this is $28.51 to $41.74 per hour. This is a reasonable estimate for this role. Individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications such as skills, education and experience.

  • Keep hand and arm steady while moving arm or while holding arm and hand in one position and to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects of varying sizes.

  • Occasional stooping, kneeling, and crouching.

  • Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.

  • Noise conditions range from very quiet to some noise.

  • Able to perceive and distinguish normal range of colors.

  • May be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to: hard hat, safety glasses/goggles, ear plugs/muffs, masks/respirators, safety vests, gloves and steel-toe boots.

  • Machine shop environment.
