    Position Summary



    The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign School of Music invites applications for a full-time, tenure-system faculty member in Musicology at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. We seek an imaginative, dynamic colleague whose scholarship prioritizes ethnographic methodologies in relation to the study of music and sound, and who is prepared to teach a wide range of courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to a forward-thinking Musicology program within a world-class research university.       Responsibilities


      The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses within the School of Music. Their courses will serve a diverse undergraduate population of students majoring in performance, musicology, education, composition, and music technology/production, as well as non-music majors. They will teach graduate students who are studying for advanced degrees in musicology, performance, conducting, and composition; they will also supervise student research, including Master's theses and Ph.D. dissertations in musicology, and research projects for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree. They will sustain a scholarly agenda that has the potential for national and international impact; establish and maintain partnerships with academic and community organizations; build relationships to attract, support, and retain students in Musicology; and contribute to service in the Musicology Area, the School of Music, and the profession.

      Minimum Qualifications



      • Ph.D. in ethnomusicology, musicology, or a closely related field conferred by August 15, 2025.


      • Evidence of scholarly activity that shows potential for national and international impact.


      • Demonstrated experience teaching undergraduate courses and preparedness to teach at the graduate level.


      • Expertise in ethnographic methodologies.



      Preferred Qualifications



      • Scholarly expertise in one or more of the following areas:


      o Ecomusicology and affiliated fields


      o Gender and Sexuality Studies in Music


      o Global Black and African Diasporic Sonic Practices


      o Indigenous/First Nations Sonic Practices


      o Ludomusicology


      o Sound Studies


      o Other emergent areas and approaches.



        • Teaching experience with a variety of styles and repertoires, particularly music by BIPOC, LGBTQ+, women, living musicians, and music from African American, Black, and Indigenous cultural traditions.


        • Experience advising graduate research in musicology/ethnomusicology or a closely related field.


        Our Musicology program fosters interdisciplinary and globally engaged research and teaching. The program values approaches that integrate musicological scholarship with ethnographic methodologies, cultural and critical theories, performance, and an emphasis on diverse musical practices. Faculty specializations span a wide variety of topics; they mentor and advise undergraduate and graduate students, while contributing to the academic community through research, teaching, and service, and fostering connections across the university and beyond; many members sustain affiliations and collaborations with other departments, centers, and programs across the campus.



        Appointment Information



        This is a 100% full-time Academic faculty position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is August 16, 2025. The salary range of employees currently holding equivalent positions is $70,000 - $79,787 for Assistant professors and $84,463 - $101,477 for Associate professors. The final salary offered will be determined by an assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. Work authorization sponsorship is available for this position.
