Description: Job Summary

Building on the Office for Sustainability's (OFS) existing data and University infrastructure, this position is responsible for measuring, tracking and reporting progress toward University-wide climate and sustainability goals, both internally and externally. This role supports OFS leadership/University and School/Units through collection, analysis, and reporting of actionable data analytics on areas of sustainability which are institutional priorities. This role is responsible for developing a public annual report every year that tracks progress toward Harvard's climate goals and broader Sustainability Action Plan and KPIs. The role requires knowledge of building energy and emissions data, building energy consumption/efficiency and the ability to work across a large building portfolio (600+ buildings across 27 million sq feet). Responsible for visualizing sustainability data and working with the OFS Senior Team to develop and prioritize new sustainability data needs and opportunities, integrating data from various data sources and systems managed by other University partners. This role will be part of a coordinated data management strategy across Campus Services and other parts of the University relating to sustainability data points, especially building data.

The successful candidate must have extensive experience with the full data lifecycle, including data acquisition, quality assurance and processing, data management and security, and data analysis and visualization. The candidate should also have experience evaluating data tools and working collaboratively with data stewards and stakeholders. Experience with complex datasets on energy and emissions from large building portfolios is strongly preferred.

Position Description

  1. Collect and prepare data sets, KPIs and visualizations/trends for Harvard's Annual Sustainability Report and website.
  2. Develop, scope and manage data projects across multiple complex topics and datasets to develop clear, transparent data to inform decision-making. This includes planning and scoping of new projects, managing data acquisition, quality assurance, processing and data visualization University-wide and at School/dept level.
  3. Work with OFS Senior team to develop high-quality, timely, transparent datasets on energy use and emissions from the University's building portfolio (pulling from University data sources) for forecasting and/or scenario analysis to support decarbonization planning and decision-making. Also, data analysis and research of emissions calculation methodologies.
  4. Work across multiple University departments and several University data platforms as part of a coordinated data management strategy across Campus Services and other departments; develop partnerships with numerous partners (Health and Safety, Engineering, Procurement, etc.) who maintain relevant data sets. Develop strategies to improve any incomplete/imperfect datasets.
  5. Work with OFS Senior team to develop reporting and communications content (e.g., data visualizations, explaining a complex story with simple graphics and data analysis for senior leaders and decision makers).
  6. Research and recommend sustainability disclosures aligned with international standards and global best practices.
  7. Scope and support data needs for on-campus research and pilot projects using Harvard's data (with Presidential Committee on Sustainability input); manage data interns as needed.


Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of seven years relevant work experience (education can count toward experience).
  • Demonstrated experience in data analysis methods and tools and data visualization principles and tools.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree preferred in either:
  • Data science, data management, business analytics, or related field and 2-3 years' work experience with sustainability data (particularly related to energy, emissions, and buildings).
  • Environmental science with a focus on buildings, energy, and emissions and 2-3 years' experience in data management and analytics.
  • Strong background in statistical methods and software environments.
  • Demonstrated analytical and innovative problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to independently scope, design and lead new projects, e.g., evaluating Scope 3 emissions methodologies (food purchasing data, food waste data, embodied carbon in construction projects, commuting/work from home impacts, air travel emissions, procured goods & services).
  • Experience with complex datasets on energy and emissions from large building portfolios is strongly preferred. Previous experience with other sustainability data is preferred.
  • Ability to work with a diverse set of stakeholders at the University (central admin departments, schools, faculty, students, Ivy Plus peers)

The ideal candidate will also display strengths in several or all of the following areas:

  • Data management: SQL and relational database design; data warehousing; process automation; business intelligence software; experience with CRM software such as Salesforce is a major plus
  • Data visualization: Tableau or other tools; advanced design of static and interactive visualizations in statistical software packages such as R/Shiny; HTML/CSS; Flourish, JavaScript-based visualization packages; Illustrator.
  • Office productivity software: It is expected that successful candidates will have experience with the Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.


Technology Skills Required: ¿Proficiency in MS Office suite. An ability to learn Harvard systems and software quickly is a requirement.

Working Conditions

Emergency Status Designation: This role is considered non-essential and may be eligible for flex-work arrangements in accordance with departmental policies and manager approval.
