Reporting to the Unit Lead for Digital & Distinctive Collections Cataloging, the Library Cataloger will be responsible for providing original and complex copy cataloging, retrospective conversion, and authority work for materials in the Libraries' Special Collections Department and University Archives. This position will plan and manage cataloging projects and coordinate all Special Collections and University Archives cataloging activities following prescribed national and local standards, and in accordance with the Library's priorities.




ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:




Cataloging and Processing of Materials (100%) :



  • Actively participates in the development, evaluation, and implementation of cataloging and metadata policies, standards, goals, procedures, and workflows in the Libraries

  • Creates local cataloging and physical processing documentation for student and staff use.

  • Corrects and/or updates bibliographic, holdings, and item records identified through system-generated reports, monitoring programs, library staff and user requests, and other quality control mechanisms

  • Identifies and resolves authority control issues in the online catalog and other discovery tools

  • Withdraws materials; Coordinates withdrawn items disposal

  • Assists in training student workers or fellow staff catalogers in local cataloging practice.

  • Must be able to work with materials which may produce a moderate dust environment and be able to lift 30 pounds, push 50+ pounds, and reach while on a stool or ladder





Communications, Relationships, and Service (ongoing)



  • Maintain helpful and supportive customer service behavior with all library customers internal and external.

  • Establish effective and supportive interdepartmental relationships and participate in cross training opportunities to increase library and unit effectiveness and to effectively disseminate information.

  • Communicate frequently and effectively with all University staff, faculty, and administrators in a timely manner regarding procedures, policies, and other necessary information.

  • When possible, participate in committees and teams within and outside the Libraries to provide services to the Libraries, University, and the Community.

  • In pursuit of the Libraries' and University's strategic objectives, model the University's "DIRECCT" values (diversity, integrity, responsibility, excellence, compassion, creativity, and teamwork) and actively works to promote them.





WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

This individual may supervise student workers in the absence of another supervisor.





  • LEVEL OF CONTACTS


The individual works with all levels of library faculty and staff, student employees and library patrons. In all contacts, the incumbent is expected to be professional and courteous.




MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Bachelor's degree

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant work experience. Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be considered.

  • Experience and knowledge of library and archival vocabularies, standards, and schemas such as AACR2, RDA, DACS, DCRM(B), AAT, RBMS vocabularies, LCSH, EAD, MARC

  • Knowledge of authority control practices

  • Experience working with integrated library systems and bibliographic utilities

  • Analytic and critical thinking skills

  • Aptitude for accuracy and detail

  • Ability to work cooperatively and productively with others

  • Ability to work independently in a team environment

  • Good oral and written English language communication skills

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Prior experience in copy cataloging preferred

  • Awareness of and sensitivity to the needs of a diverse population of students, staff, faculty, and community members.

  • Ability to learn new technologies and incorporate them into existing operations.





PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS



  • Familiarity with the Alma library services platform.

  • Working knowledge of one (1) foreign language

  • Understanding of academic library standards, policies, and procedures.
