The Registered Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Counselor, working under moderate supervision, provides individualized counseling, support, and case management to clients enrolled in methadone maintenance and other medication-assisted treatment (MAT) programs. The counselor is responsible for managing client caseloads, conducting assessments, developing treatment plans, and ensuring compliance with treatment protocols. The role also involves delivering a range of services, including individual and group counseling, client progress monitoring, and coordination with the treatment team to support clients in their recovery.

How will I contribute
Manage a caseload of clients in Opioid Treatment Programs, ensuring they receive appropriate care and support. Provide one-on-one counseling and case management services to clients, addressing their substance use and psychosocial needs. Conduct comprehensive assessments to determine client needs and develop individualized treatment plans. Complete initial assessments and treatment plans within 28 days of admission. Regularly update treatment plans every 3 months or as needed to reflect client progress and evolving needs. Complete discharge summaries within 30 days of client discharge. Deliver group counseling sessions to support recovery, educate clients on coping strategies, and promote positive behavioral changes. Monitor client attendance at required meetings, classes, and group sessions, ensuring adherence to program requirements. Track and document client progress through regular progress notes and treatment plan updates. Ensure compliance with treatment protocols, including drug testing, attendance records, and submission of required documentation to the Clinical Supervisor. Maintain accurate and timely documentation for all client interactions, including progress notes, treatment plans, assessments, and other required records. Submit treatment plans, quarterly step requests, and justifications for review and signature by the Clinical Supervisor. Ensure that all documentation complies with Title 42 confidentiality regulations, HIPAA, and clinic policies. Collect urine samples and conduct other drug screenings (e.g., breathalyzer) as required, documenting results according to clinic protocol. Work closely with the treatment team, including medical and administrative staff, to coordinate care and ensure that client needs are met. Communicate with external providers, such as criminal justice system representatives or referral agencies, as needed. Assist with financial assessments, fee collections, and monitor client payment schedules. Adhere to clinic protocols and participate in the development or revision of treatment protocols as necessary. Ensure that clients receive services in accordance with federal, state, and clinic regulations (e.g., Title 9, Title 22). Participate in regular staff meetings, training sessions, and clinical supervision to enhance counseling skills and stay up-to-date with regulatory changes. Engage in ongoing professional development to maintain expertise in substance use disorder treatment and recovery methods. May encounter risk of working with persons with SMI (serious mental illness) that may include, but not limited to persons in mental health crisis, persons that may be intoxicated or impaired by drugs or alcohol, persons who may be DTO (danger to others), DTS (Danger to Self), or GD (Gravely Disabled). If such situations arise, staff will be required to call local emergency personnel to help deescalate the crisis, use crisis intervention techniques, and consult with supervisor as soon as practically possible. Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall functioning and success of the program.

What I bring
High School Diploma (or Equivalent) SUD Registration in good standing by an agency approved and recognized by the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) is required at time of hire Preferred a minimum of 2,080 hours of related experience or associate degree or the equivalent sixty college semester units with emphasis in behavioral or social sciences. Three years abstinence if there is a history of substance abuse. Completion of 40 hours per-year period of related training is required for continued employment for Registered counselor Class C Driving License Knowledge in medication-assisted treatment (MAT) protocols, particularly methadone/buprenorphine maintenance and medically supervised withdrawal programs. This includes understanding of Title 9 and Title 22 regulations governing narcotic treatment programs, as well as the clinical application of drug testing, treatment planning, and case management. Must be well-versed in confidentiality requirements, including Title 42 and HIPAA, to ensure client privacy and regulatory compliance. Knowledge of recovery strategies, individual and group counseling techniques, and the multidisciplinary approach to addiction treatment are essential for providing effective care. Strong counseling and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport, motivate individuals, and provide both individual and group therapy. Demonstrate excellent organizational skills to manage a caseload, maintain accurate documentation, and ensure compliance with treatment protocols. Ability to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team, including medical and administrative staff, is crucial. Keen understanding of confidentiality regulations and the ability to manage sensitive client information with discretion and professionalism. Compassionate, empathetic, and nonjudgmental, with a genuine commitment to supporting individuals in their recovery journey. Patience, resilience, and adaptability are essential, along with the ability to respond to the dynamic needs of clients while maintaining professional boundaries. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and a collaborative mindset are key, as is the capacity to remain calm and composed in challenging or high-stress situations.
