Staff Surveyor

Thomas & Hutton has an opening for an experienced Staff Surveyor to join our Land Survey Department in Charlotte, NC.

Staff Surveyors are responsible for directing crews of two or more people in successfully completing a variety of field assignments. It is a supervisory position that requires high impact decisions and directing the work of others while continuing to perform the same technical duties as other crew members. The work can be both mentally and physically challenging and must be performed in a wide range of conditions.

Minimum Requirements:

Education: B.S. in Surveying or Civil Engineering or equivalent experience preferred.

Experience: 3+ years experience as a Staff Surveyor preferred. Prior experience conducting boundary and topographic surveys required. Experience with boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS Land Title Surveys. Experience with transportation and utility corridor surveys a plus. Experience with Carlson SurvCE and Robotic total stations a plus.

Skills:

  • Displays precision and accuracy in all assignments.
  • Must have knowledge of mathematics, including trigonometry.
  • Working knowledge of surveying instruments and data collectors.
  • Familiar with the use of AutoCAD.
  • Familiar with the use of Civil 3D
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to read and interpret plats, deeds, easements and plans.
  • Good team interaction skills.
Duties:
  • Performs office surveying work requiring the application of advanced techniques, procedures and criteria in carrying out a sequence of related surveying tasks.
  • Using prescribed methods, performs specific and limited portions of larger assignments.
  • Utilizes advanced knowledge of surveying practices and procedures (Field & Office).
  • Strong exercise of judgment is required on details of the work and in making preliminary selections of surveying alternatives.
  • Applies standard practices and techniques in specific situations, adjusts and correlates data, recognizes discrepancies in results and follows operations through a series of related detailed steps.
  • Participates in the resolution of moderate to complex survey problems.
  • Responsible for creation of survey data, calculations and computations.
  • May prepare packages containing all necessary data for field survey.
  • Compiles and reviews data from the field for completeness and provides information to the Survey Project Manager.
  • Conducts court house and property records research.
  • Processes field data and prepares topographic surveys, tree surveys, wetland surveys and utility subsurface surveys.
  • Calculates traverses and closures.
  • Prepares elevation certificates as needed.
  • Performs field checks and verifies surveys.
  • Plots land descriptions.
  • Reviews policies of title insurance.
  • May reduce survey field notes, writes land descriptions,
  • Reviews calculations and computations for topographic, boundary and ALTA survey maps.
  • Prepares design, topographic, boundary and ALTA survey maps.
  • Sets up and checks of aerial photogrammetric surveys.
  • Assists in training entry level staff surveyors.
  • Additional duties as necessary and/or required by supervisor.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in an environment that may contain venomous snakes and insects such as ticks, red bugs, wasps, bees, hornets, yellow jackets, etc.
  • Ability stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of temperatures.
  • Ability to climb hills and walk long distances.
  • Ability to traverse different types of terrain.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 75lbs.
  • Ability to interact both verbally and written
