Job Description:

Reports to: Zheng-Yi Chen, Principal Investigator


Our laboratory is focused on the study of inner ear development, hearing loss and developing treatments for hearing loss. We use wide-range technologies for our work including genetics, cellular and molecular biology, genome editing, viral delivery, animal models, and physiological testing. Our overall goals are to develop treatment for hearing loss in patients. We provide a nurturing environment for work, learning and advancing personal career.



Principal Duties and Responsibilities:



1. Under the general supervision of the investigator, performs laboratory experiments including: cell culture, DNA/RNA isolation, PCR, general biochemistry, immunohistochemistry, and microscopy.


2. Performs general laboratory animal work.


3. Consults with the investigator as experiments proceed, and with approval, implements necessary adjustments in experimental design.


4. Records, reviews, and analyzes test results. Assesses quality of data and repeats tests as necessary to determine reproducibility of results.


5. Performs literature searches and helps to prepare presentations and written articles for publication; prepares literature for journal club presentations.


6. Maintains common laboratory supplies, solutions, and buffers


7. Prepares and determines suitability of solutions, reagents, buffers, and cell culture media.


8. Performs routine maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment.


9. Orders laboratory supplies as necessary within budgetary limits.


10. Ensures compliance with institutional and federal guidelines in health, safety and animal work.



Skills and Abilities Required:



1. Ability to work well with others in an open laboratory environment.


2. Ability to exercise sound judgment with respect to laboratory safety.


3. Ability to learn quickly and perform a variety of laboratory procedures including: cell culture, sterile technique, DNA/RNA isolation, and PCR.


4. Ability to learn and perform basic handling of laboratory mice.


5. Knowledge of guidelines for ethical research practice and conduct.


6. Ability to assess quality of data and to trouble-shoot technical challenges.


7. Ability to perform experiments and represent data in detailed, thorough and precise manner.


8. High degree of computer literacy.


9. Good oral and written communication skills.

Qualifications

Qualifications:



1. Bachelor's degree in biological/physical science or related field.


2. Experience in a directly related research setting preferred.


3. Willingness to work with animal models.
