Job Description Summary


Reporting to the Director of the Penn Institute of Infectious and Zoonotic Disease (IIZD), the Director will provide project management and leadership to support mission-critical initiatives for the IIZD as well as mission support for the Wildlife Futures Program and Center for Microbial Interactions. The duties described primarily cover IIZD, however the scope of responsibilities and exerptise will span across all three programs.
The Director will oversee and coordinate a range of projects within IIZD and the other programs to ensure they are executed efficiently and effectively. This role involves managing multiple project timelines : symposium, pilot grants, resource grants and training programs and stakeholder communication. The Director will work across the whole of the University to develop, implement or revise administrative processes that support and advance the strategic goals.
This position demands a candidate with a strong science background to effectively interface with scientists, PhD and veterinary students, and media/outreach teams. Because of the focus of the IIZD on basic and translational research a strong scientific background is essential to understand the technical approaches used by the research faculty and an appreciation of recent developments in the field of emerging infectious disease. This background would help the Director guide the priorities for the IIZD fellowship and pilot project proposals, and to develop grant proposal for different funding agencies on behalf of the IIZD. A strong scientific background will be essential to understand the research that is being done by the IIZD faculty and to distil research progress for public and internal consumption.




Job Description





Job Responsibilities



  • Ability to manage school-wide projects involving stakeholders across the biomedical community at Penn

  • Communication development, ranging from widely distributed written material to presentation planning and development

  • The Director serves as a liaison and leader, collaborating closely with senior Penn VET leaders in the Dean's office, Development and departmental leadership. This role requires:

  • Exceptional professional communication, representing IIZD leadership both within the School and broadly across the University and interfacing with external research foundation

  • Stellar project management expertise, including impeccable organizational, time management and prioritization skills

  • Robust critical thinking skills

  • Independent leadership skill, ability to “manage up” and provide valuable guidance and direction to an array of faculty and senior leaders

  • An energetic, self-motivated, positive and efficient approach

  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned






Qualifications





  • A bachelor's or advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in a biology-related field, or experience in infectious disease research, is essential with 5 to 7 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required

  • A solid understanding of biology and infectious diseases is essential for providing knowledgeable guidance on program planning and facilitating effective communication with the scientific community
