Placement is between $87,574.00 - $110,598.00

Position Overview


Instructional Design faculty will work across various programs and disciplines to provide on-time delivery of high-quality online learning experiences. Partnering with faculty, subject matter experts and utilizing a quality framework, the Instructional Designer develops, designs, implements, evaluates and continuously improves online competency-based education courses and programs using sound instructional design practices employing multimedia, video, audio, and other emerging technologies. Instructional Design faculty will be an active participant in decisions related to learning design, ensuring that experiences meet the specifications of the programs and adhere to institutional expectations for rigor, quality, scalability, and the success needs of our students, faculty, and staff.





Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities


The duties below are representative of the role and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed within the scope of work.



  • Collaborate and partner with cross-functional teams including, but not limited to, learning and instruction, information technology, student services and success and other key stakeholders.

  • Apply instructional design skills, relevant learning theories, and knowledge of learning technologies and environments to the design of high quality learning experiences across varied delivery modalities.

  • Design competency-based education programs that provide efficiency, flexibility, personalization, achievement of goals, and fit with industry expectations.

  • Manage timelines and ensure the quality of each project to meet associated deliverables and deadlines.

  • Use equity-centered, culturally relevant and inclusive design practices such as Critical Reflection, Inquiry-Based, Culturally Responsive Teaching, Universal Design for Learning & Digital Accessibility.

  • Work with faculty, subject matter experts, and Assessment faculty to design high-quality assessments to measure evidence of learning for both formative and summative outcomes.

  • Designs and develops interactive learning objects and instructionally sound materials that address various learning styles and are accessible to all students, including those with disabilities.

  • Designs and produces learning materials in a variety of formats, including print, graphics, audio, video, animation, and multimedia, to support gamification, teaching, learning, and college initiatives.

  • Apply best practices in backwards program design to the context of Competency-based Education programs.

  • Value learner differences and designs with a differentiation mindset for knowledge construction throughout all areas of the Competency-based online learning.

  • Incorporate data and feedback loops to improve the student journey.

  • Collaborate on the identification of student personas and ensure programs efficiently meet their needs.

  • Conduct industry and outside standards research and align program design to meet these needs.

  • Recommend tools and technologies that achieve scale while maintaining quality programming.

  • Establish a training/professional development model for faculty and all other stakeholders.

  • Adhere to institutional standards for learning experience build specifications within the learning management system (LMS) as well as experimenting with new standards and building in collaboration with LMS experts.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities



  • Current, extensive knowledge of instructional design and learning theory.

  • Experience building quality online asynchronous, competency-based courses according to project requirements and style guide.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and history of positive results achieved collaboratively.

  • Experience with UDL, ADA, and copyright compliance.

  • Experience with Agile development or rapid prototyping.

  • Demonstrated commitment to a growth mindset related to design, technology, and personal growth

  • Ability to pivot quickly in a constantly evolving environment.

  • Ability to learn new technologies, solve emergent technical problems, and share learnings and suggestions with a team to come to a quick, value-driven solution.

  • Commitment to adding value to the team through efficiency and iterative development.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects at different stages while meeting deadlines and quality standards.

Minimum Qualifications



  • Master's in instructional design/technology or educational technology or related field

  • Four or more years of online education course design experience or curriculum development.

  • Experience in online learning theories and technologies.

  • Competency in LMS systems and assessment delivery systems such as Blackboard, Canvas, Strut, Smart Author, Brightspace, Moodle, etc.





Desired Qualifications



  • Background in learner experience design.

  • Knowledge and utilization of open educational resources (OERs).

  • Experience in developing courses characterized by innovation in instructional design.

  • Expertise in competency-based learning.

  • Teaching and learning experience.





Working Conditions and Travel



  • Calbright College is a statewide online college where all instruction and support are done via various online technologies both in person and remotely. Calbright College has administrative offices in Sacramento available for use. When working remotely, employees should be able and willing to use digital communication tools as used by the college, and have the ability to work on a computer for extended periods of time. Although this is a primarily remote position, there may be instances in which you will be required to attend meetings or travel to in-person events.

  • Requires the ability to function in a remote online instructional environment performing work of primarily a sedentary nature. Requires the ability to use hearing and speech to make presentations to groups and carry on conversations over the phone and in-person. Requires speaking skills to communicate with staff and students in one-on-one and small group settings, on the phone, and to distinguish sound prompts from various types of equipment. Requires near visual acuity to read printed materials and computer screens. Requires sufficient hand/arm/finger dexterity to retrieve work materials, operate a personal computer keyboard, and operate standard office equipment. Requires the ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

  • Work is performed indoors where minimal safety considerations exist.
