Position Overview:
The Health & Safety Specialist is an integral member of the Production Business Team structure and provides a layer of health & safety (H&S) assurance with existing compliance systems to maintain 100% compliance with H&S requirements. This role provides strong H&S field presence and support for their assigned unit. The H&S Specialist is a resource for all employees and contractors with general safety questions and advisement.
Responsibilities:
Support assigned business team and communicate incident information, trends, and compliance issues to assigned business team.
Be knowledgeable of and provide updates of work activities in assigned unit.
Inform business team on H&S procedure/program updates and assist business teams with understanding and meeting compliance responsibilities.
Support incident and Near Miss investigations.
Participate on Joint Health & Safety Committee audits.
Participate in pre-work safety meetings, MOCs, PHAs, PSSRs, etc.
Follow up on incidents with field visits and assist with incident Safety Flashes in assigned area.
Provide H&S coverage during turnarounds.
Drive implementation of H&S policies and procedures.
Provide consistent interpretation for Life Saving Rules.
Teach and mentor refinery personnel and contractors in hazard recognition/mitigation and in positive safety intervention techniques.
Experience and Qualifications:
Required Education and Experience:
3+ years of experience working in a Health & Safety role at an industrial facility
High school diploma or equivalent education
Familiarity with federal OSHA regulations
Ability to communicate effectively and build strong professional relationships at all levels in the organization
Preferred Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Health & Safety or in a related technical discipline
Graduate Safety Professional (GSP)
Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
Physical Requirements:
Physical ability to work around and on industrial equipment, including frequent climbing of stairs and ladders
Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in designated areas (respirator, hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, heeled boots, and hearing protection)
