Position Overview


The Department of Theatre, Film, and Media Arts (TFMA) in the College of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University seeks a full-time tenure track faculty at the rank of Assistant Professor with a specialization in narrative filmmaking with a start date of August 15, 2025.



This faculty member will make core contributions to the Moving-Image Production (MIP) program. The MIP program is a growing, vibrant interdisciplinary program that covers areas of Animation, Documentary, Experimental, and Narrative film production. The classes are taught in the new state-of the-art TFMA building in the university's Arts District, outfitted with a sound stage, a smaller studio, a voice-over booth and control room, a screening room, and editing facilities.



We are looking for an innovative filmmaker with an active national and/or international profile of screenings and exhibitions. The ideal candidate should be able to work with students coming from diverse backgrounds and interests and should be willing to collaborate with colleagues to envision the future of the burgeoning Moving-Image Production program's future.



The prospective hire will lead undergraduate narrative production classes focusing on visual storytelling techniques, practical production skills, and an exploration of the critical and historical aspects of the medium.




Performance Objectives


The successful candidate will:



  • Teach courses undergraduate and/or graduate courses on foundational and advanced topics in Narrative cinema production classes focusing on visual storytelling techniques, and practical production skills.

  • Lead discussions and activities exploring the critical, historical, and political dimensions of narrative filmmaking, examining its evolution and impact on society.

  • Provide hands-on instruction in practical production skills, including story development, directing, cinematography, editing, and sound design.

  • Lead group critiques to provide critical feedback on conceptual and technical aspects of students' work.

  • Advise and mentor students and help develop their creative vision, technical skills and professional practices.

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues within the Moving-Image Production program and the TFMA Department to design curriculum and programmatic revisions.

  • Serve on various departmental committees.




Education and Experience Requirements


Required:



  • Master of Fine Arts degree in film production or equivalent by August 15, 2025.

  • Knowledge of film/video production equipment

  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud software



Desired:



  • Experience teaching in a higher education setting

  • Experience in curriculum development

  • Experience in writing and directing
