Budget Title: Academic Advisor (SL-3)




Salary: $55,151 - $58,350




The Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science seeks an outstanding candidate to join the dynamic Watson College Advising team. The Watson College Advising team is comprised of an enthusiastic team of professionals who promote student success and graduation by providing timely and accurate academic and student service information to students in the computer science and engineering programs.




Advisors work with both students and faculty to promote the success of Watson College students. Advisors apply their expertise to provide timely and accurate information about degree requirements, recommend appropriate university services, provide prospective students with information about degree programs, and promote best practices related to college advising services. Advisors play an important role in helping new students make a successful transition to Binghamton University and the Watson College.




Watson Advisors meet with students in one-on-one appointments and in group settings, participate in all undergraduate orientation sessions to welcome new students, and serve as ambassadors of the Watson College at other events throughout the year.




Watson College advisors are assisted by a team of student peer advisors similarly dedicated to providing the best possible general advising and appropriate referrals at all points of contact.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:





  • Conducting one-on one meetings with students to review degree progress, recommend general course options, and facilitate students' connections to required faculty advising or other support services

  • Supporting new students at the Watson College orientations, open houses, and other related public and internal events

  • Providing both walk-in and scheduled appointment times on a weekly basis in the main office, in residence halls, and at other locations across campus

  • Performing Watson College transfer student credit evaluations, both domestic and international, and assisting the Office of Undergraduate Admissions with review of transfer applications, as needed

  • Providing support for transfer partnerships with sending institutions by providing accurate information and materials, speaking with prospective students and families, and identifying course equivalencies

  • Learning all necessary campus systems related to job duties, including, but not limited to Banner, Xtender, DegreeWorks and SAS

  • Maintaining contacts with other campus offices, both within the Watson College and within other areas of Binghamton University

  • Supporting the strategic missions of the Watson College and Binghamton University through participation in campus service activities and other projects as assigned

  • Work collegially and professionally with constituents and all members of the university community at all times

Requirements:





  • Master's degree and a minimum of two years of professional experience in higher education

  • Demonstrated understanding of the educational role of academic advising in enhancing student learning and development

  • Ability to effectively, professionally and tactfully interact and communicate, both orally and in writing, with a diverse community of students, faculty, staff and visitors

  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality

  • Understanding of and sensitivity to diverse socioeconomic, cultural and developmental needs

  • Ability & willingness to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and occasional weekends




Preferred:





  • Experience with BANNER, DegreeWorks and SAS
