Department Summary


The University of North Texas (UNT) is a Carnegie R1 research university and a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution and Minority-Serving Institution with a population of over 45,000 students. The Denton, Texas community combines close proximity to one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country (Dallas-Fort Worth) with an intimate and culturally vibrant college town atmosphere. The UNT Chemistry Department consists of 29 faculty members, including 20 research-active faculty; over 100 graduate students; and approximately 200 undergraduate chemistry majors. The department is in a growth phase, having hired an endowed Welch Chair in Chemistry, two new Associate Professors, and five new Assistant Professors in the past five years, and with plans attain a core of 25 research-active faculty over the next few years. Our department has a strong culture of interdisciplinary collaboration, with specific strengths in materials chemistry, computational chemistry, and catalysis. New faculty have the opportunity to contribute to these areas, as well as interfacing with growing interdisciplinary programs in Chemical Biology and Chemistry Education. Position Overview


The UNT Chemistry Department invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of chemical catalysis, to begin September 1, 2025. Applicants should have a record of research accomplishment and compelling ideas for building an independent research program in catalysis, with a strong preference for the broad area of experimental heterogeneous catalysis. This may encompass surface science, electrocatalysis, operando studies of catalysis, biocatalysis, or other topical research areas in fundamental and applied catalysis science. Candidates whose research complements or builds upon existing strengths in the department are especially encouraged to apply. The selected individual will interact with faculty, staff and students within the Department of Chemistry and in other disciplines, contributing to a strong tradition of interdisciplinary and collaborative research at UNT. Development of a nationally and internationally visible, externally-funded research program is expected. The new faculty member will have access to substantial research support infrastructure in the Chemistry Department, including staffed NMR, X-ray diffraction, and high-performance computing facilities; a stockroom; and a shared instrumentation laboratory that houses a suite of equipment for chromatographic, spectroscopic, mass spectrometric, gravimetric, and microscopic analysis of samples. Contributions to undergraduate and graduate teaching (typically, one course per long semester) and departmental and university service are expected.



Minimum Qualifications


* A Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field
* A record of peer-reviewed publications in chemistry or related fields



Preferred Qualifications


* Postdoctoral research experience
* A record of peer-reviewed publications in the field of heterogeneous catalysis
