The University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, has an exciting opportunity for a full time Manager, Nursing for the Ambulatory Surgery & Inpatient Unit.
The Manager, Nursing promotes and restores patients' health by developing day-to-day management and long-term planning of the patient care area, directing and developing staff, collaborating with physicians and multi-disciplinary professional staffs, and providing physical and psychological support for patients and their friends and families. This employee enforces professional staff behaviors that facilitate positive relationships among colleagues, physicians, administrators, and other hospital personnel.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
Oversees patient flow through designated clinical areas.
Maintains nursing guidelines by writing and updating policies and procedures.
Maintains nursing operations by initiating, coordinating, and enforcing program, operational, and personnel policies and procedures.
Assures quality of care by developing and interpreting hospital and nursing division's philosophies and standards of care, enforcing adherence to state board of nursing and state nurse practice act requirements, and to other governing agency regulations, and measuring health outcomes against standards.
Maintains nursing staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training nurses and auxiliary staff.
Completes patient care requirements by assigning nursing and staff.
Maintains nursing staff job results by coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees.
Establishes a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients and their friends and families.
Promotes patients' independence by establishing patient care goals, teaching and counseling patients, and reinforcing patients' understanding of disease, medications, and self-care.
Resolves patient needs by utilizing multidisciplinary team strategies.
Maintains a safe and clean working environment by designing and implementing related procedures, rules, and regulations.
Accounts for the collection of data to ensure performance improvement and optimal customer service standards.
Assures all staff meet mandatory continuing education requirements and yearly hospital-based competencies.
Provides insight on the unit(s) operations to nursing leadership to assist in the development of strategic planning and departmental expansion.
Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures.
Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution
Certification and Licensing:
State of Florida Registered Nurse Licensure (RN)
BLS, ACLS, PALS
Experience:
Minimum 3 years of relevant experience
Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:
Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
Proficiency in computer software (i.e., Microsoft Office).
Knowledge of business and management principles.
Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others.
Ability to lead, motivate, develop, and train others.
Department Specific Functions:
Patient Care Management :
Assesses staff competency and compliance with standards of care and policies and procedures by direct observation, nursing documentation review accuracy and communicates results to appropriate staff members.
Promotes patient safety by participating in safety rounds and soliciting input from the staff to promote "safety officers'
Provides assistance to staff members in evaluating practice and creating strategies for improvement.
Evaluates nursing care during rounds with patients, staff, and or customers.
Routinely assists in patient care and assists physicians with special procedure needs.
Ensures nursing care plans are individualized to meet the patient's needs.
Promotes patient satisfaction within the staff and observes for trends.
Assists with monthly staff meeting to include patient satisfaction results and performance improvement initiatives as a standing meeting agenda.
Reviews medication administration process to include acquisition, discrepancy resolution, reporting and staff accountability.
Assures departments routine and emergency equipment is checked and tagged according to policy and procedures.
Maintains a process to assure that supply inventory is current.
Promotes safe and current infection control practices to promote staff and patient safety.
Operational Management :
Supervises staff to include training, counseling, disciplining, and termination.
Maintains staff schedule and staffs unit according to staff competence and census fluctuations.
Participates in recruitment and retention process to include interviewing, hiring and retention process.
Monitors staff attendance, punctuality, overtime and cancellations.
Collaborates with other members of the health care team such as patients, family and guests focusing on service excellence.
Balances staff requests with unit patient care needs.
Prepares monthly staff /work schedules in accordance with posting guidelines. Works closely with charge nurses to identify needs.
Maintains a safe, efficient patient flow and seeks opportunities for improvement.
Prepares nursing staff to address issues related to patient privacy, security and confidentiality.
Maintains post-operative patient call back program to include identifying trends and appropriate reporting of results.
Educational Responsibilities:
Attends continuing education programs to maintain and improve clinical /management skills.
Collaborates closely with Nursing Education to ensure staff have access to current literature, professional standards, online policies and procedures and other current information.
Identifies needs for in services and adjust staff assignment to participate.
Maintains staff communication bulletin board to post performance improvement initiatives, industry benchmark standards and nursing evidenced based practices.
Oversees orientation of new staff, confers with RN preceptor for progress update and modifies as needed.
Coordinates cross training as activities among units.
Coordinates educational resources availability and promote an environment that fosters higher education.
Leadership:
Assists with monthly staff meeting to include patient satisfaction results and performance improvement initiatives as a standing meeting agenda.
Assigns staff and monitors staff competency and compliance with administrative, clinical policies and procedures such as annual CBL and RN competencies.
Identifies problems and implements corrective actions as necessary.
Actively participates in committees such as Surgical Services Improvement Project, OR Committee Meeting, Nursing Leadership and Policy and Procedure Committee as deemed necessary.
Serves as liaison between Medical Center, external contractors and vendors and University.
Communicates with other members of the healthcare team to coordinate patient care.
Ensures compliance with all institutional policies and procedures including mandatory services, employee health procedures, Federal, State, regulatory and accrediting agencies standards and regulations.
Leads unit initiative with National Patient Safety Goals.
Responds to patient care issues promptly, provides direction and seeks solutions in a timely manner.
Follows established policies for event reporting to include chain of command.
Participates in Emergency/Disaster Planning drills and assumes leadership role in the absence of Nursing Director in case of such emergency,
Assists Nursing Director in capital budget planning, position control matrix unit supplies allocation and additional staffing needs.
Maintains effort, commitment and resiliency when facing change.
Maintains composure under stressful situations.
Promotes a healthy work environment with staff members, physicians, coworkers and leadership by maintaining a clear line of communication and autonomy.
Accepts constructive criticism as an opportunity for improvement.
