Department Summary


The College of Health and Public Service (HPS) at the University of North Texas, distinguished as one of the few Tier One research universities designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), prepares graduates to address diverse and complex social issues such as aging, disability, disaster management and recovery, criminal justice, health disparities, and public safety, and find solutions to challenges in public administration, public health, and urban design. We have seven academic departments with undergraduate and graduate programs, the Center for Public Management, the UNT Speech and Hearing Center, UNT WISE and a number of professional development and clinical training programs to facilitate careers to address a global society.


HPS students are trained to lead nonprofits, become educators, researchers and professionals who strengthen the diverse communities we serve, with thoughtful, inclusive, and equitable practices as audiologists, behavior analysts, city managers, emergency managers, health care administrators, public safety administrators, public health specialists, rehabilitation counselors, speech language pathologists, social workers, urban planners, and more.



Position Overview


This part-time HPS graduate academic advisor is responsible for advising master's students on degree/program requirements and course scheduling. They maintain and update student status records and degree plan audits, take a leadership role in developing a vibrant virtual community that supports graduate student success, participate in outreach/recruitment activities, manage special projects and/or serve as a subject matter expert on specialized majors and confer with faculty and administers on transfer credits and academic policy.



Minimum Qualifications


Bachelor's Degree and two years' of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, or professional academic advising.

  • Ability to use a variety of complex computer applications.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.

  • Ability to work independently and lead project teams effectively.

  • Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).

Job Duties:



  • Advises Master's degree students regarding University requirements and individual program requirements in a timely and professional manner.

  • Inspire graduate student engagement, share information, and help students access services through Talon to Talon, UNT's virtual community platform.

  • Prepares accurate degree audit templates/guides for academic programs and interfaces with the Toulouse Graduate School. Uses advising technology to maintain accurate student records.

  • Works with graduate school staff and academic departments to manage master's degree applications; contacts graduate students to follow-up on non-payment spreadsheets.

  • Partners effectively with campus resources to make appropriate referrals to in-person and online student services.

  • Confer with faculty or administrators on transferability of courses and academic policy issues, such as acceptable course substitutes for a particular degree.



Work Schedule:


20 hours/week within the Monday-Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm timeframe
