Job Description:





Basic Function




Reporting to the Chief Engineer, the Per diem Utility Plant Operator operates and maintains the Central Utility Plant per Massachusetts General Law Chapter 146 section 49. The Per diem Utility Plant Operator will monitor and maintain steam, hot water, cooling, and cogeneration systems in the Central Utility Plant (CUP) including all other auxiliary components within the Plant on a day-to-day basis.




Major Responsibilities:





Equipment Monitoring





  • Maintains a shift as needed in the operation and maintenance of the CUP. This will include monitoring correct water level and proper steam and or water pressure, maintaining records, logs, charts and reports related to plant operation.

  • Place boilers on or off line according to demands

  • Perform routine maintenance in the boiler room and cogeneration plant areas

  • Perform boiler water treatment tests on shift. Manually add chemicals and water to chemical tanks.

  • Maintain adequate fuel levels', make necessary additions to fuel levels by adding when warranted

  • Perform hourly readings on boilers, natural gas reciprocating engine and generator equipment





Equipment Preventative Maintenance





  • Follow and adhere to all maintenance schedules related to CUP equipment

  • Clean, paint and lubricate all CUP auxiliary equipment as needed

  • Sweep mop and paint floors within the CUP as directed by the Chief Engineer

  • Other duties as assigned






Requirements:





  • High school/vocational school diploma and a minimum of 2 years' preferred experience in the operation and maintenance of Cogeneration plant systems, high-pressure boiler, and related Central Utility Plant auxiliaries or equivalent combination of training and experience.

  • Must possess a Massachusetts Second Class Fireman's License or higher license.

  • Incumbent must have in depth knowledgeable in troubleshooting high-pressure boilers and cogeneration equipment, possess the theory and ability to apply good safety practices around high pressure boilers and high speed rotating equipment.

  • Must have ability to lift 50lbs, bend, stoop and twist on a daily basis; able to stand, walk or sit for extended periods of time; able to climb stairs and ladders and open and close valves atop boilers.

  • Preferred qualifications include basic pipefitting/welding skills and proficiency in computer applications, such as Word, Excel, CMMS, Email (Outlook) and common web based applications.

  • The Central Utility Plant provides essential services to the University. CUP staff are required to work weekends, holidays and expected to work during emergency closings and provide occasional coverage due to the absence of other operators and/or emergency maintenance response.

  • Must be able to maintain a positive, professional relationship with all members of the Clark Community.
