Purpose of Position
This position will provide laboratory-specific assistance required for the function and maintenance of the Nagamoto-Combs' laboratory. Such assistance includes general and technical support in biomedical research, animal husbandry and colony management, and account-related bookkeeping.
Duties & Responsibilities
80% -General and technical support for a biomedical research laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Sciences
Make laboratory solutions and keep them stocked and/or filled
Maintain laboratory space, labware, and equipment
Monitor laboratory supplies and order when needed
Subbing and labelling histological slides
Autoclave reagents, supplies, and biohazardous wastes
Process biological samples for assays and histology
Perform biochemical assays, such as polymerase chain reaction, electrophoresis, western blot, ELISA
Manage and record laboratory safety issues and animal use
Train new undergraduate and graduate students
Document protocols and data for research activities
Contribute to manuscript preparation
Support laboratory personnel as needed
15% - Animal (mouse) husbandry and colony management
Keeping accurate and active logs of mouse numbers in the animal facility
Breed and maintain multiple transgenic mouse colonies
Label, weight, and monitor mice during experiments
Monitor general well-being of mice and euthanize mice when necessary Depending on the person's skill level, genotyping, phenotyping, and experimental procedures such as behavior tests, administration of treatments via injections and oral gavage, tissue, blood, saliva and stool sample collections, and survival/non-survival mouse surgeries will be expected.
5% - Account-related bookkeeping
Keep monthly records of laboratory expenses in an electronic format such as in a Microsoft Excel file
Confirm the accuracy of records with the department officer
Required Competencies
Ability to calculate molarity and dilutions in metric system
Algebra level or above math skills (demonstrated in application materials)
Ability to use a computer with Windows platform (Windows 10 or later)
Ability to comfortably use Microsoft Office applications, at least MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and MS Outlook.
Willingness and ability to work with mice and people
Ability to listen and follow instructions
Ability to organize and prioritize tasks
Ability to communicate at a professional level in both verbal and written English
Understand and adhere to scientific ethics, lab safety procedures and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the lab
Detail oriented and diligent in record keeping
Training on other necessary software, such as Zoom, Adobe Photoshop and GraphPad (a statistics software), will be provided.
Minimum Requirements
Associate's degree in the field of biological sciences or equivalent.
Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor of Science degree in neuroscience, immunology, medical laboratory science, biochemistry, or biology.
