The husbandry/animal care technician works within the NYU Office of Veterinary Resources to provide basic care and husbandry for a variety of animal species (including mice, rats, and any other species as directed by their supervisor). Responsibilities include cleaning and changing animal cages per standard operating procedures, federal and state regulations and guidelines, and any other University policies regarding animal care and use. Perform routine husbandry techniques, such as breeding and maintaining strains of mice or other animals. Observe and record changes in behavior, appetite, and signs of illness, pain or death in animals. Alert supervisor, veterinarians and principal investigator of problems. Complete and maintain room logs; administer treatments according to instructions; keep accurate and complete animal care records; Monitor environmental conditions including ventilation, temperature and lighting and report changes to supervisor; assist in cage wash on an as needed basis; comply with governmental regulations and University policies regarding health and safety.
This is an "essential position" - must be able to work weekends/holidays as scheduled, including during inclement weather, and in addition work extra hours during an emergency. Responds as essential personnel for declared disasters. Works well with all team members to ensure that actions support the department, the researchers and the well-being and health of the animals. Must be able to lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.), bend, climb, and stand for prolonged periods. Must safely handle and dispose of hazardous material, understand, and follow all SOP's, perform animal husbandry duties as assigned. Employees may work in wet rooms, around large industrial cage washers or in some noisy environments.
Required Education:
High school diploma or GED
Preferred Education:
Associate's degree in Animal Science.
Required Experience:
1+ year of animal care husbandry experience
Preferred Experience:
In Laboratory animal care and husbandry, Experience operating relavant lab equipment (e.g. cage washer, cage racks and animal racks)
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Ability to operate standared office equipment, ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, Must be able to lift/push 50 lbs. Must be abble to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to operate standard office equipment. Must be able to lift and carry up to 55 pounds routinely. Understand and follow appropriate SOPs,, safety procedures (Including wearing personal protective equipment). and quality assurance guidelines. Well-organized, detail-oriented, and adaptable to changes.
Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Certification; Knowledge and understanding of proper animal husbandry and routine veterinary care procedures for a range of laboratory animal species; Knowledge of regulatory policies and guidelines associated with the ethical use of animals in research
In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the hourly rate for this position is USD $33.565. This rate is based on bargaining unit contracts. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, clinical compensation, or other items.
