Position Title: Continuing Non-Tenure Track Teaching Faculty in the Humanities
Position Type: Faculty
Location: Villanova, PA
Recruitment Type: Internal/External Applicants
Work Schedule: full-time/9-months
Department: 151-Augustine and Culture Seminar Program
Position Summary: Villanova University’s first-year seminar program, the Augustine and Culture Seminar Program (ACSP), seeks to hire one full-time continuing non-tenure track (CNTT) faculty member to teach its two-semester humanities seminar. With a reading list grounded in the Augustinian, Catholic, and liberal arts tradition, the Augustine and Culture Seminar (ACS) is reading-and-writing-intensive and also facilitates student engagement in the intellectual, cultural, and artistic life of the University and the greater Philadelphia area. Students from all four of Villanova’s colleges (Liberal Arts & Sciences, Nursing, Engineering, and Business) take the two courses (1000 Ancients and 1001 Moderns) in this program taught by 20+ full-time faculty from a wide range of disciplines. A signature feature of the first-year experience at Villanova is the Communitas: First-Year Learning Community program that is a result of the coordinated effort between ACSP and the offices for Residence Life and Student Involvement.

Villanova is a Catholic University sponsored by the Augustinian order, located in the ethnically, racially, and culturally diverse Philadelphia metro area. Diversity and inclusion are an integral component of the University’s mission. The University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer and seeks candidates who understand, respect and can contribute to the University’s mission and values. The University is committed to fostering, maintaining, and celebrating a community of teachers and students that includes people of all ages, genders, abilities, races, ethnic origins, religions, socioeconomic statuses, sexual orientations, creeds, and political views.
Duties and Responsibilities: The position is a renewable 9-month academic appointment at the rank of assistant teaching professor with a 3/3 teaching load (maximum enrollment 17). The successful candidate will have PhD in the humanities or social sciences, provide evidence of teaching effectiveness, and demonstrate a willingness to explore and teach the Augustinian and Catholic intellectual traditions as well as texts outside of these traditions and of one’s discipline and areas of expertise. The positions are primarily and essentially teaching positions, and ACSP cultivates a community of teacher-scholars dedicated to meeting the perennial and changing needs of our students through an ongoing program of faculty development activities. After a one-year probationary period, ACSP faculty are eligible to teach for other departments and programs in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. There is an expectation of significant service in the program, college, and university. There are no scholarship expectations, but there is funding available to CNTT faculty at the program, college and university levels for research, curricular development, and conference travel. Full-time CNT faculty who demonstrate excellence in teaching and service are eligible for promotion. Villanova offers a competitive benefits package to all full-time faculty, including tuition remission after a qualifying period of employment.

We especially encourage applications from candidates with expertise in one of the religions, philosophies, cultures, or literatures of East Asia; candidates with expertise in Biblical Studies with a specialization in the Hebrew Bible; and, candidates with an expertise in Latin American literature. We seek to add teacher-scholars with an area of expertise not already represented in the program. Areas of expertise already represented in the program include political theory, continental philosophy, Augustinian studies, Islamic studies, and Catholic theology.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A Ph.D. in a humanities discipline or social science at the time of application.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated effective, innovative, and inclusive pedagogy.
