Position Description


The Division of General Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Washington, School of Medicine is accepting applications and nominations for an Emergency General Surgeon at University of Washington Medical Center. The faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor without tenure by reason of funding (WOT), Associate Professor WOT, or Professor WOT. Assistant Professors are eligible for multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Associate Professors WOT and Professors WOT hold indefinite appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. This position will have an anticipated start date in Summer/Fall 2025.


The position will be primarily based at the University of Washington Medical Center. The position will provide acute general surgery consultation in the elective, inpatient, urgent outpatient, and emergency department settings expanding general surgical access to the UWMC (both Montlake and Northwest campus). Importantly, there is no trauma or critical care associated with this position. This position will work collaboratively with the UWMC-Montlake (UWMC-ML) Emergency General Surgeons on both campuses.

In addition to clinical practice, the positions will participate in the education of surgical residents, medical students, and division fellows. The positions will be expected to develop an area of scholarly expertise, as expected of every faculty member, in consultation with the Division and Section Chiefs. The University of Washington Medical Center is a nationally recognized academic medical center offering outstanding specialty and primary care. All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.


At the rank of Assistant Professor (WOT) the base salary for this position will be $29,584-$31,667 per month ($355,008-$380,004 per year). At the rank of Associate Professor (WOT) the base salary range for this position will be $34,167-$36,667 per month ($410,004-$440,004 per year). At the rank of Professor (WOT) the base salary range for this position will be $36,667-$41,667 per month ($440,004-$500,004 per year). Base salaries at all ranks will be commensurate with candidate experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. This range is inclusive of base salary provided through the University of Washington Physicians (UWP) practice plan, in addition to base salary provided by the University. Other compensation associated with this position includes clinical productivity incentives through UWP. Please note that only compensation provided by the University is included in university benefit determinations and calculations. Compensation provided by UWP practice plan may provide eligibility for separate benefits offered by that organization.

Qualifications

Prospective candidates must have an MD (or foreign equivalent) and be certified or eligible for certification by the American Board of Surgery (or foreign equivalent). Must be licensed to practice medicine in Washington by the time of appointment. In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
