Located at Eden Prairie City Center (8080 Mitchell Road Eden Prairie, MN 55344), travels to inspection sites.
Typical hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; varies based on business need
Responsibilities
The Building Inspector II supports the Building Division to ensure standards are established by the code to safeguard, life, limb, health, property, and public welfare in the City of Eden Prairie are complied. The primary position responsibilities and areas of impact are:
Reviews and interprets blueprints and specifications submitted for building permits for new construction, alterations, additions, demolitions, repairs, maintenance.
Fields phone calls, meets with contractors, architects, job superintendents, and homeowners to discuss building and other code issues; discusses need with clients and renders accurate interpretations.
Maintains an effective working relationship with inspections department staff and other department staff members to ensure positive response and conformance with regulatory code issues; performs various field inspections.
Maintains technical proficiencies with building and other applicable codes; researches and collects evaluation and research reports on new or substitute materials and construction practices.
Assists in developing various department information handouts to assist in educating contractors, homeowners, architects, and property owners on various regulatory codes to ensure their thorough understanding and conformance when applied to their building projects; assists in developing various department inspection check sheets for field inspectors to use when performing daily inspections and for contractors and job superintendents to use as check list to check for prior scheduling of their inspections.
While these areas are the primary focus of the position, we believe strongly in teamwork and employees will be called upon to perform a variety of duties as a part of their role with the City.
Requirements
Technical degree (BIT or trade related) or bachelors degree in related (construction) and 3 years of experience required or minimum of 5 years experience in a recognized trade or background in architecture and/or engineering. State Building Official Certification/License required (or be able to obtain within the first year of employment); Commercial building inspections experience preferred; mechanical experience preferred; delegation agreement with Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry preferred. At least 2 years of experience utilizing computer technology preferred. A valid drivers license is required.
Inspectors work with tight inspection schedules generally being allotted 30 minutes including travel time to perform a thorough and accurate inspection.
Most work is performed in a field environment. Inspectors spend a portion of each day in a vehicle with frequent exiting and entering. There is often exposure to traffic and moving construction equipment. Working conditions include wet, muddy, slippery, dusty and windy conditions. At times there may be intermittent exposure to very disagreeable working conditions. Inspectors are required to take appropriate safety precautions and wear protective gear. Inspectors must be able to climb ladders and scaffolding, walk on uneven surfaces with occasional lifting, pushing or pulling of up to 50 pounds.
