As one of the most comprehensive and acclaimed institutions for the study of music, the IU Jacobs School of Music(JSoM) plays a key role in educating performers, scholars, and music educators who influence music performance and education around the globe.


The more than 1,600 students who study at the Jacobs School of Music benefit from the intensity and focus of a conservatory combined with the broad academic offerings of a major university.


The essence of a great music school is its faculty, and the more than 180 full-time faculty members in residence at the IU Jacobs School of Music include performers, scholars, and teachers of international renown. In addition, many top musicians and scholars come to the school each year to give master classes and guest lectures or to serve as visiting artistic directors, conductors, and faculty.


The breadth and number of performance opportunities are unparalleled in college music study, with the school offering more than 1,100 performances a year, including up to 7 fully staged operas. The school's facilities, including 5 buildings located in the heart of the IU Bloomington campus, comprise of outstanding recital halls, more than 170 practice rooms, choral and instrumental rehearsal rooms, and more than 100 offices and studios. The grandest facility is the Musical Arts Center, which features technical capabilities that are among the best in the nation.



Job Summary



Department Specific Responsibilities


  • Provides academic advising for a diverse community of students pursuing or considering undergraduate majors, minors or certificates in the Jacobs School of Music.

  • Informs students of relevant IU and school policies related to academic progress, enrollment, and graduation.

  • Advises students of academic requirements in face-to-face meetings, telephone appointments, virtual technology, and in drop-in appointments.

  • Builds relationships with students, faculty and the university community.

  • Assists with orientation and onboarding activities.

  • Contributes and serves on committees as assigned.

  • Assists the Director of Undergraduate Studies and the advising staff with scheduling.

  • Maintains confidentiality and FERPA compliance.

General Responsibilities


  • Provides academic counseling for students pursuing or considering majors, minors, or certificates. Guides students in planning their course of study in concert with the departments' curricular requirements; explains curriculum requirements and school and campus policies.

  • Meets with students in groups and 1-on-1 to guide students in academic programs that will meet their educational needs and the requirements of their chosen major, minor, and/or certificate.

  • Assists students in making informed decisions about a choice of major and potential career or graduate school direction; helps students to assess their interests, values, and academic skills and to understand these in relation to major choice and potential future career/graduate school options.

  • Teaches students how to navigate university systems, academic processes, and policies; empowers student accountability in academic decisions about courses, career direction, and long-term plans; and provides guidance on avenues for increased involvement as an IU student and in the IU community.

  • Refers students to appropriate campus resources, such as academic support resources, placement programs, internship and overseas study opportunities, etc.

  • Tracks and monitors students' academic progress, reviews and maintains confidential student records to ensure that students meet requirements and to document advising discussions, and communicates this information in a timely manner to students and to appropriate academic offices when necessary.

  • Represents the advising function as a presenter at campus meetings and recruiting functions; assists in developing written advising materials for use in student events.

  • Researches, recommends, or creates best practices for unit or campus initiatives, projects, processes, or programs and may provide guidance to other Academic Advisors.

This position is posted at the Career Career Level but may be filled at the Core Career Level depending on the candidate's qualifications. EDUCATION



Required



  • Master's degree in a related field


Preferred



  • Master's degree in Music

WORK EXPERIENCE



Required



  • 2 years in student affairs, teaching, academic advising, or a related field


Preferred



  • 3 years in student affairs, teaching, academic advising, or a related field

  • Experience in a student-focused, higher education environment is highly desired

Working Conditions / Demands



This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

This position may be eligible to work a hybrid schedule (mix between remote or in-person work) depending upon the work needs of the department and is subject to change based on university policy and business needs.
