Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from an ABA-accredited law school with a minimum of three years of Texas-based practice experience required. Must have successfully passed the Texas Bar Exam and be in good standing with the State Bar of Texas. A combination of experience in consumer, criminal, employment, landlord-tenant law, immigration law, wills, powers of attorney, tort law, business formation, contract law, and family law is preferred. Additional education from an ABA-accredited law school may be considered in lieu of experience.
Provides legal advice and counsel to currently enrolled university students, which includes but is not limited to advising students on issues relating to consumer law, criminal law, landlord/tenant law, immigration law, family law, wills, powers of attorney, tort law, business formation, contract law, and employment law. There is no court representation.
Advises currently enrolled students on their legal rights and responsibilities in a variety of legal areas where students have questions. Drafts legal documents for students and prepares students for court appearances as needed. Provides presentations about the office and about legal topics as requested to members of the university community. May participate in a variety of committees and workgroups in the Division of Student Affairs and the university. Drafts requested reports and updates (e.g., assessment collection and reporting) for the office. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Researches legal issues, provides professional, accurate, and clear advice to students, treat students with courtesy and respect, superior writing and communication skills, coordinate legal consultations with the administrative associate and student employees, and collect data for assessment and other purposes. Must maintain good standing status with the State Bar of Texas.
Up to 20% of this position, over the fiscal year during off-peak periods, may be performed remotely as determined by the supervisor.
