Job Summary:

As the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs in the School of Social Work, your primary mission is to create a supportive and enriching environment for our students. Your leadership, strategic vision, and commitment to student success will significantly impact the overall well-being of our academic community.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Student Advising and Support:


  • Ensure students have the guidance needed to navigate their educational journey effectively.

  • Collaborate with academic advisors to align academic advising with program requirements, career aspirations, and personal goals.

  • Lead ongoing assessment and continuous improvement cycles to ensure all technological, systemic, and procedural enhancements are effectively contributing to student success and operational excellence.

  • Address student concerns, challenges, and academic progress, advocating for their success.

  • Collaborate with Academic & Student Affairs leadership in planning and executing student orientation.


2. Supervision and Mentorship:

  • Provide mentorship to the Director of Academic Advising.

  • Lead and mentor the advising team, fostering professional growth and excellence in advising practices.

  • Encourage a student-centered approach among advisors, emphasizing empathy, active listening, and personalized support.

  • Collaborate with the Director of Academic Advising to coordinate training sessions and workshops to enhance advising skills.

3. Student Organizations and Events:

  • Oversee student organizations within the UTA School of Social Work, promoting student engagement, leadership, and community-building.

  • Support student-led events, workshops, and conferences that enhance the academic and social experience for both on-campus and online students.

  • Create opportunities for students to connect with peers, faculty, and practitioners.

  • Plan and oversee School commencement activities.

4. Student Success Initiatives:

  • Develop strategies to improve student retention, persistence, and graduation rates.

  • Develop and execute a plan to enhance engagement of online students.

  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to identify at-risk students and implement targeted interventions.

  • Work closely with campus resources (such as tutoring centers, counseling services, and disability support) to address student needs.

5. Leadership Development Programs:

  • Oversee undergraduate and graduate student leadership programs.

  • Provide training, mentorship, and resources to student leaders, empowering them to positively impact the School of Social Work community.

  • Encourage student involvement in governance, committees, and decision-making processes.

6. Collaboration and Outreach:

  • Engage with other academic units, university offices, and external partners to enhance cross-campus initiatives.

  • Represent the School of Social Work in university-wide committees and events.


Minimum Qualifications:



  • MSW or MEd in Higher Education.

  • Minimum of two (2) years experience in higher education student affairs.

  • Experience supervising staff in professional environments.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Doctoral degree in social work, or doctoral degree in higher education or a related field

  • Five (5) years experience in higher education student affairs

  • Demonstrated experience with technology enhancement or innovation


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:



  • Expert leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Track record of leading successful student engagement and success initiatives.


Other Requirements :



  • Candidate will present a 15-minute vision for student affairs upon invitation of interview.
