The Legal Division of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) has an exciting opportunity for a Legal Counsel I. This position is located in the NAIC's state-of-the-art offices in the heart of downtown Kansas City which includes great restaurants and top-notch entertainment venues. This is a full-time hybrid position in a positive and flexible environment.
Responsibilities include:
Perform legal analyses on matters such as contract negotiations and reviews, non-profit legal issues, employee benefit plans, tax issues, litigation support, responding to subpoenas, and other areas that may require legal attention.
Provide legal support and guidance on corporate and business operations issues including identifying legal operational, contractual, intellectual property and corporate issues.
Perform accurate legal research and provide sound legal advice to senior leaders, attorneys, and other staff, including drafting correspondence, memorandums, and other such documents as necessary.
Draft and review agreements on behalf of the organization, which includes working with NAIC business owners to identify contract objectives and potential issues, ensuring that contractual relationships involving the organization are in its best interests.
Apply company policies and procedures to resolve issues, determine a course of action based on guidelines, and modify processes and methods as required.
Collaborate and communicate as necessary with colleagues and immediate supervisor, project leaders, and other professionals in the team/group, developing stable working relationships internally.
Provide standard professional advice and create initial reports and analyzes for review by experienced team professionals.
Skills and Abilities:
Proficient with Microsoft Windows, Word, Outlook, and Excel.
Ability to perform accurate legal research including use of the Internet, Westlaw and Lexis and provide sound legal advice.
Ability to effectively communicate, through both oral and written expression, with all levels of staff inside and outside the organization.
Ability to effectively negotiate, draft and review complex agreements.
Must be a team player in order to work as part of a team on multiple projects.
Must be customer service oriented in order to serve both internal and external customers.
Must be a self-starter and proactive in order to take independent initiative on projects
Minimum Education and/or experience required:
J.D from an Accredited college or university and one to three years' related experience.
Must be licensed to practice law or eligible to be licensed in the state of Missouri.
Compensation:
Starting at $91,436, to $101,373, to be commensurate with education and experience.
