In this role, you will:
Execute a vital part of the patient care process through grossing, embedding and preparing slides for routine H&E and special stain procedures.
Perform all technical aspects of grossing and dictating tissue specimens using a variety of laboratory materials and equipment under direct supervisor of Pathologist
Ensure specimen integrity upon arrival and throughout the entire process
Create a gross description for each specimen including, but not limited to anatomical site, size, color, dimensions, count, cut techniques, abnormal findings, then dissects and prepares tissue for cassettes
Escalate non-routine complicated specimens to the Pathologist or lead Histotechnician
Load prepared cassettes into tissue processors and start processor
Perform Quality Control and Quality Assurance procedures
Perform and document scheduled preventative maintenance
Recognize when troubleshooting is needed for grossing, processing, embedding, cutting, staining
Work in a fast-paced laboratory environment with biological and chemical hazards
Champion safety, compliance, and quality control
All you need is:
1 year of laboratory training or experience performing embedding, routine microtomy, and H&E staining of pathology specimens
Certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or equivalent experience to sit for the exam
Strong reading, writing, and analytical skills.
Ability to operate general laboratory equipment, including but not limited to: telephones, computers, processors, microscopes, manual and automated staining systems, and audible alarms.
Bonus points if you've got:
2+ years of laboratory training or experience in a high-volume laboratory with documented special stain and immunohistochemistry experience
Graduation from a school of Histotechnology accredited by CAHEA/NAACLS AND HT (ASCP) certification
Associate's Degree in the field of Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory technology obtained from an accredited institution or equivalent under the 1988 Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) guidelines of high complexity testing ** OR ** Education/training equivalent to the above that includes at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, or 24 semester hours of science courses that includes 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination
