The Medtronic Neuroscience Group develops life-restoring therapies and healthcare solutions that span the care continuum; integrating technologies and applying clinical and economic evidence to increase patient access, improve efficiency of procedures and deliver successful patient outcomes.

In this exciting role as a Senior User Validation Test Engineer you will apply technical expertise to develop and perform usability and validation activities for software, hardware and systems to ensure Medtronic's cutting edge medical products meet our user's needs, quality and reliability standards. Join our Lafayette, CO based team in helping develop new hardware and software solutions for surgical navigation, robotics, and other enabling technologies.

You will work closely with other development and cross-functional teams in an Agile environment. This position requires technical expertise and provides team leadership to solve complex technical problems with ingenuity and creativity. Position contributes to strategic direction for all aspects of Test Engineering including programs to positively impact development, production, installation, and service of products to the global marketplace. Work is performed under limited direction.

A Day in the Life


  • Plan and conduct user validation testing, including user recruiting, designing and conducting usability tests, summarizing, documenting and communicating results.

  • Coordinate and contribute activities to ensure project timeliness to goals, objectives, and milestones.

  • Ensure compliance with standards and regulations, including ISO and FDA QSR.

  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to other test engineers.

  • Participate in all phases of product development as needed such as reviewing requirements, design, usability, risk assessment and defect tracking/analysis.

  • Contribute to department wide test strategies and process improvements.

  • Maintain proficiency in the use of testing tools, methodologies and best practices.

  • Effectively communicate and present findings, problems, and solutions within the team, organization, and outside the organization including recommendations for actions and prioritization.

  • Collaborate and maintain excellent working relationships with internal and cross-functional team members and stakeholders.

  • All activities must be performed in compliance with the Quality System.

  • Performs duties in compliance with environmental, health and safety related site rules, policies or governmental regulations.

  • All other duties as assigned.

  • Travel requirement: 10-20%

Must Have: Minimum Requirements


  • BS / BA degree in Engineering, Human Factors or Computer Science or technically related field

  • 4+ years of experience with BS/BA

  • 2+ years of experience with Master's degree

  • Experience with usability validation and human factors (IEC 62366)

  • Experience with design or testing of complex software and hardware systems

  • Understanding of software development methodologies and software lifecycle

  • Ability to work in a team environment

  • Proven leadership skills and mentoring capabilities

  • Able to handle multiple tasks/projects and manage priorities

  • Experience with Agile and iterative development practices

  • Strong understanding of federal and international medical device regulations, such as FDA QSR, ISO 14971, 62304, 62366 and 13485, and EU MDR

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communications, time management, and organizational skills

  • Experience engaging clinicians and gathering VoX feedback from customers

  • Experience working in a regulated environment

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$99,200.00 - $148,800.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
