POSITION: Instrumentation & Test Lead

JOB SUMMARY

The instrumentation and Test Lead is a dynamic role that provides leadership and oversight of the instrumentation lab areas and key support to critical functions, including the Product Engineering, Service Engineering, Tuning and Controls, Assessments and Conversions Engineering groups. This role offers exposure to a wide variety of heavy frame gas turbine design, operation and maintenance aspects. The typical support tasks include working with Product Engineering to instrument new combustors to support R&D campaigns, installing instruments at off-site test facilities, and instrumenting and testing customer owned gas turbines in the field to support post upgrade commissioning or troubleshooting. When not providing field support, the Instrumentation and Test Lead will maintain lab and test equipment, field equipment such as CDMS and tuning kits and ensure tooling and inventory is available, in good working order, and calibrated.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Maintain accurate Inventory of all deployable equipment as well as lab related tooling.
  • Manage the calibration & maintenance of all Instrumentation lab assets, including Scanivales, SCXI modules, signal generators, Borescopes, portable flow benches, CDMS equipment including CDAS computers, cabling, accelerometers, and related items.
  • Respond to support needs from other groups by preparing workstations and tools for efficient execution by the teams.
  • Support R&D campaigns by assisting in the development, review and execution of combustor instrumentation plans.
  • Assist flow lab personnel by building combustor test rigs and bench testing turbine tuning systems.
  • Assembling instrumentation carts and tuning kits for field deployment.
  • Accurately track the deployment and return of all equipment in the field.
  • Install and set up data acquisition systems and commission instrumentation on customer Engines or at off-site testing facilities. After testing is complete, remove the instrumentation and deploy the system to the next required work assignment.
  • Execute R&D Borescope & combustor flows at site when requested.
  • Provide CDMS walk down & installation support and troubleshooting.
  • Other tasks that support the efficient operation of the Product and Service Engineering groups

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education & Training

  • 5+ years of experience within a Manufacturing, Engineering or technical environment
  • Strong decision-making and organizational skills are required.
  • Must possess a can-do attitude and operate with the highest level of integrity.
  • Familiarity with the application of instrumentation and use of accelerometers, thermocouples, and static and dynamic pressure transducers.
  • Familiarity with instrumentation equipment like Scanivales, SCXI modules, signal generators, Borescopes, CDMS computers, DDAQ, and assembly equipment.
  • Plan all required activity in the lab to ensure tasks are performed in a safe and efficient manner that meets schedule requirements.
  • Ability to read and develop engineering specifications and drawings and implement plans independently.
  • Safe use of mechanical equipment including forklifts, cranes and other lifting devices
  • Able to lift moderate weights.
  • Good verbal and written communications and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. SAP or other ERP is preferred.
  • Travel is seasonal, increasing during typical outage seasons.
  • Approximately 35% travel will be required.

Physical Requirements

  • Stooping/Crouching. Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
  • Kneeling. Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Crawling. Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
  • Reaching. Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Standing. Particularly for sustained periods of time
  • Walking. Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work area to another.
  • Pushing & Pulling
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs. Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position.
  • Grasping. Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes.
  • The worker is subject to noise. There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above ambient noise level.
  • The worker is subject to hazards. Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.
  • May require travel (air & ground) with short notice.
  • Being able to wear required PPEs for specific tasks performed, such as respirators, Tyvek suit, gloves, face shield, etc.
  • Ability to cooperate and work with people.
