POSITION SUMMARY Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, performs the technical tasks involved with the storage, distribution, packaging and labeling of drugs. Completes associated recordkeeping and charging activities. Ability to use automated drug dispensing systems, vertical and laminar flow hoods, department pharmacy computer systems as required. Current registration with the Maryland Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician.
Principal Duties:
1. Demonstrates a base knowledge or core drug information to support quality patient care. Includes generic and trade names of top 100 drugs, basic knowledge of antibiotic, critical care and emergency drug classifications.
2. Demonstrates an ability to complete prescribed mathematical calculations used in unit dose medication preparation and complete annual competency examination.
3. Maintains a working knowledge of storage and handling requirements for available pharmaceuticals.
4. Demonstrates a knowledge of identified medication precautions.
5. Demonstrates a working knowledge of preparing and processing unit dose patient medications.
6. Performs unit dose and cartfill medication filling with 100% accuracy and within prescribed time frame 98% of the time.
7. Demonstrates a working knowledge of the required functions in the selected pharmacy patient medication computer system (SMS) and completes required assignments. Includes crediting and billing medications, processing missing doses. generation of batch labels, production lists, fill lists, patient census and patient labels.
8. Demonstrates competency in medication filling, delivery, retrieval and troubleshooting for automated medication dispensing machines (i.e., PYXIS, Omnicell) and performs as prescribed.
9. Completes all labeling requirements for medication preparation and filling. Responsible persons initials, lot numbers, where appropriate, appropriate warning labels, and expiration dates are consistently present and legible.
10. Demonstrates a working knowledge and competency to re-package unit dose medications with established guidelines.
11. Assists the pharmacist in all areas of unit dose patient medication processing and supervised non -IV extemporaneous compounding.
12. Demonstrates knowledge and competency of age specific medication use and pharmaceutical care requirements.
13. Demonstrates knowledge and competency in basic IV aseptic technique. Successfully completes annual practical and written examination.
14. Performs supervised large and small volume IV admixture preparation according to established accuracy and quality standards.
15. Demonstrates knowledge and competency in preparation of parenteral nutrition solutions (TPN) and performs age specific neonatal and adult TPN accuracy check procedures as established.
16. Maintains a working knowledge in the use of all equipment in the IV admixture preparation area.
17. Completes all equipment and IV Room QI documentation as required by TJC, the State Board and OSHA. Includes hood cleaning, batch preparation, expiration dating, and waste and needle disposal. Demonstrates a working knowledge base and competency to perform prescribed mathematical calculations used in adult and pediatric IV admixture preparation and successfully complete annual competency examination.
