General Definition of Work:
The Patrolman First Class (Pfc.) patrols assigned areas to maintain order, prevent illegal activity, enforce laws, and protect the community and citizens.
Purpose:
The primary purpose of this role is to provide public safety to the citizens and visitors to The Town of St. Michaels.
Essential Tasks:
Patrols designated areas, in a vehicle and on foot, to maintain a visible presence to deter crime - detects violations of laws and ordinances - identifies wanted vehicles, persons, and unusual conditions - responds to calls for service - evaluates situations and determines appropriate course of action - intervenes in fights, subdues attacking people and disarms suspects, restrains hostile individuals, and pursues fleeing suspects - assists in crowd control - performs rescue operations - responds to emergency situations under hazardous conditions - administers emergency medical aid - extinguishes small fires - conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations by interviewing and obtaining statements of victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informants - collects, preserves, and processes evidence - performs searches - detains suspicious vehicles and persons - arrests when probable cause exists - searches, restrains, transports, guards, and processes people - serves warrants and summonses - conducts surveillance and participates in search warrants - administers first aid while awaiting ambulance and other emergency personnel to arrive on scene - escorts farmers and equipment - parades and funeral processions within the town of St. Michaels - identifies community problems through community interaction - recommends possible solutions to the department - attends, and participates in community meetings at the direction of the department - performs security surveys - establishes a rapport with the public - maintains annual in-service mandatory training and instructional meetings - keeps informed of current law enforcement practices, procedures and trends - handles disputes and advises victims, suspects, and the general public of rights and processes - directs crisis mediation with persons involved in domestic and civil disputes, suspects attempting suicide or hostage situations - communicates effectively over law enforcement radio channels and through computer networks -- utilizes communication equipment to verify warrants or identify wanted vehicles or people - prepares accurate and complete written investigative and other administrative reports and forms - arrest warrants and statements of charges using appropriate grammar and math - prepares cases, appears, and testifies in court - enforces all traffic laws and ordinances - operates various types of radar and breathalyzer equipment, - administers roadside sobriety tests - arranges for blood or other chemical tests - investigates accidents - directs traffic, and assists in special details - inspects and maintains all assigned equipment, including vehicles, firearms, and clothing.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED equivalency
Completed a state-certified police academy
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of the English language, including correct grammar and spelling.
Knowledge of basic arithmetic.
Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing in calm, loud, and distracting environments.
Apply knowledge, experience, and reason to arrive at prompt and effective decisions for both routine and critical situations.

Police Officers may be required to work overtime as necessary, with little or no notice.
Police Officers must adapt to changes in working conditions, which include working nights, weekends, and holidays, changing shift configurations, and variables of weather.
Police Officers may be required to use deadly force.
Applicants must be able to safely perform the duties of the position without posing a threat to the health or safety of themselves or others.
All applicants and employees in this position must be of good moral character and emotionally stable.
In-depth and up-to-date knowledge of federal and state laws as well as modern policing principles.
Training certification in firearms, first aid, and CPR
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Physical Requirements:
Push-Ups: eighteen (18) in one minute
Sit-Ups: twenty-seven (27) in one minute
Flexibility: approximately 1.5 inches beyond toes (while seated)
1.5 Mile Run: maximum time of 15 minutes and 20 seconds (15:20)
Other Requirements:
MUST maintain a minimum of 18 annual hours of mandated police in-service training.
MUST be 21 years of age.
MUST maintain a valid CPR / AED Certification.
Be a United States citizen.
Completed a state-certified police academy
Possess a valid Maryland driver's license and have a good overall driving record.
Be in excellent physical and mental condition as determined by comprehensive examinations.
Be able to pass a written police examination.
Be able to pass a background and security check, and be of good moral character, with no felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions for which a sentence of imprisonment for one year or more could have been imposed.
Restrictions:
Applicants cannot become a police officer in the State of Maryland if they have:
Ever committed, been involved in, or convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor.
Ever illegally sold, produced, cultivated, distributed, or transported a controlled dangerous substance, narcotic drug, or marijuana. Illegally used a controlled dangerous substance or narcotic drug, for any purpose within the past 3 years prior to application, marijuana 1 year and must agree to mandatory random testing for the first two years of employment.
Illegally used a controlled dangerous substance, narcotic drug, or marijuana while employed as a law enforcement officer.
Ever used heroin, phencyclidine (PCP), or lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD).
Used any controlled dangerous substance or narcotic drug, excluding marijuana, since becoming 21 years old.
