Located in Greater Boston, MassBay is a comprehensive, open-access community college offering associate degrees and certificate programs on three campuses in Wellesley Hills, Framingham, and Ashland, Massachusetts.

Position Summary:

The ideal candidate will join a vibrant and inclusive educational community,and have a desire and ability to work with a diverse population.

A part of the public safety department responsible for patrolling campusesand buildings, assisting college community members in a proactive manner,providing a police presence on campus as the eyes and ears for administration,conduct investigations as appropriate and working and acting in a manner toachieve crime prevention and community safety. The Campus Police Officer shallperform duties in an honest and respectful manner to provide quality customerservice and assistance.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Patrol the buildings and grounds of the College on foot or in a patrol vehicle to ensure the security of buildings and grounds and to guard against trespass, theft, damage to property, fire, and injury;
  • Enforce state laws as well as the rules and regulations of the institution; restrain or arrest suspects when necessary;
  • Aid courts or grand juries in the prosecution of cases;
  • Enforce College traffic and safety regulations;
  • Investigate crimes, traffic accidents and other matters, identify responsible individuals or criminal offenders and criminal activity and where appropriate, apprehend offenders and participate in subsequent court proceedings;
  • Protect state and federal constitutional guarantees;
  • Facilitate the movement of people and activities;
  • Identify problems that are potentially serious in nature to the College and law enforcement or government entities;
  • Create and maintain a feeling of security in the community;
  • Promote and preserve civil order;
  • Provide other services on an emergency basis;
  • Perform specific duties and responsibilities as required by the Chief of Police or his designee;
  • Responsible for the efficient performance of all duties in conformance with the rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and orders contained in all manuals issued by the Department;
  • Other duties as assigned within the Campus Police Officer classification.

Required Qualifications:

  • Be eligible for certification as a law enforcement officer by the Police Officer Standards and Training Commission (POSTC) after satisfying all requirements:

-Successfully satisfy all requirements and pass the Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) prescreening process, including the physical fitness and endurance tests (e.g., HRD Physical Abilities Test, Cooper Test). Successfully complete the MPTC approved basic police training academy or be eligible for an official MPTC exemption;

-Failure to meet the entrance requirements or to successfully complete the course of training shall result in dismissal or, for lateral appointment within the bargaining unit, return to previously held position in accordance with the AFSCME Agreement;

-The candidate must be a U.S. citizen and at least 21 years old on the day the training academy begins;

-The candidate must possess a high school diploma or have passed the High School Equivalency Testing Program (HiSET), formally known as the GED;

-The candidate must have successfully completed an entry-level academy or Bridge Academy operated by and approved by The Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC);

  • Ability to pass a pre-employment medical exam;
  • Ability to pass an extensive background investigation and CORI Check. No person, who has been convicted of a felony or any offense punishable under M.G.L. Chapter 94C (drug law violations); or has been convicted of a misdemeanor and has been confined to any jail or house of correction as punishment for said crime, M.G.L. Chapter 22 C section 14, will be considered for employment;
  • Acknowledgement of mandated duties as a Responsible Employee (RE) under Title IX and as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).;
  • Must be able to successfully complete a psychological exam and be declared fit for duty by the examining psychologist;
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a MA License to Carry (LTC-A) license;
  • Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D motor vehicle operator's license;
  • Ability to pass a drug and/or alcohol test.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Sensitivity and commitment to the goals of Affirmative Action and workforce diversity;
  • Experience working in a diverse environment;
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with underserved students;
  • Graduation from an approved MPTC full-time police academy or have equivalent training that meets the exemption requirements of POSTC and MPTC;
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in criminal justice;
  • Previous law enforcement, security, or equivalent military experience;
  • Possession of current CPR and First Responder certifications;
  • Bilingual.

Additional Information:

Salary Range: :AFSCMEUnit II, Grade 16 Step 7 $64,605.06 annually. Appointmentsfrom outside the bargaining unit begin at Step 1 of the range.
