GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Under indirect supervision of the Chief Technologist, the incumbent performs standard electroencephalographic (EEG) examinations (includes routine awake and sleep EEGs, portable EEGs and long term monitoring bedside EEGs) on both outpatients and inpatients. Responsibilities include test set up, electrode application, conduction of tests and the collection of information pertinent to the interpretation of the tests. May perform clerical/administrative duties as required.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Greets patients and explains the examination procedures to the patient and/or family. May perform the tests in the laboratory, at the patient bedside, in an intensive care unit or in the emergency room.
Selects predetermined standard and special electrode combinations (montages) made necessary by the case under study. May need to add additional electrodes as clinically indicated.
Measures patient's head using the international 10-20 system prior to placement of monitoring equipment. Operates the EEG equipment to record EEG procedures.
Monitors recording as it is in progress, makes pertinent notations of the clinical state of the patient and defines abnormal from normal activity based on the patient's history and clinical condition.
Obtains standard recordings, recognizes artifacts and takes appropriate steps to eliminate them. Uses activating procedures such as hyperventilation, photic stimulation and sleep.
Abstracts relevant information from the patient's clinical record and obtains additional information from a patient interview. Writes a technical report with an impression of the data to aid in the physician's interpretation.
Accurately enters patient data into a reporting system computer terminal and retrieves and reviews previous tests/recordings as needed for comparison. Stores data appropriately.
Maintains, troubleshoots, cleans and performs minor repairs on the EEG equipment; reports need for major repairs to supervisor.
Helps maintain the laboratory inventory. Keeps laboratory in a neat and orderly fashion.
Attends departmental staff and in-service meetings as required.
Follows all established departmental policies and procedures. Maintains patient safety and patient confidentiality at all times.
Must be available to work on-call, off shift and weekends.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from an EEG training program or Associates Degree program.
Six months or more experience working in a patient care environment.
Eligible for ABRET certification to be completed within 2 years from date of hire.
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
Ability to perform routine/sleep EEGs and long term monitoring continuous bedside EEGs on patients of all ages.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Ambulatory inpatients and outpatients are performed in the EEG laboratory. Bedside tests are performed on non-ambulatory and ICU patients on the floors.
