The Consumer Engineering team is responsible for providing digital wallet, P2P, onboarding, and shopping experiences for PayPal users. We're embarking on a multi-year journey to revamp the consumer experience by adding valuable new features that will impact PayPal's 350-plus million users. By collaborating with product owners, architects, and developers of downstream systems, you will set the technical direction for the mobile consumer experience.

As a senior member of the Consumer Engineering organization, you will play a pivotal role in designing, developing, implementing, and maintaining the company's consumer applications, focusing on iOS and Android mobile native offerings. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of mobile devices, mobile operating systems, and system libraries, as well as hands-on experience building iOS and Android native applications, identity and access management technologies, strong leadership skills, a strategic mindset, and the motivation to achieve results in a fast-paced environment. By collaborating with product owners, architects, and developers of downstream systems, you will set the technical direction for the mobile consumer experience.

Your day to day



  • Engage with multiple teams of highly talented engineers and architects to design and develop highly scalable, secure, and configurable identity solutions that meet the needs of our customers and stakeholders.



  • Mobile App Development: Design and build innovative, scalable, and reliable mobile applications for iOS and/or Android platforms.


  • Actively engage with leadership across Product, Architecture, Design, and Engineering to design, propose, discuss, and refine new features and functionality.


  • Collaborate with other engineering teams, IT, and business stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver innovative identity solutions that meet organizational needs.


  • Communicate with stakeholders on technical standards, principles, methodologies, and trends.


  • Enhance overall system operational characteristics by establishing best practices for code quality, reducing technical debt, and building frameworks or shared techniques to improve engineering effectiveness.


  • Identify opportunities for refactoring, API changes, and other types of technical debt remediation.


  • Influence management to drive technical decision-making for the right selection of technology by providing forthright, understandable, and actionable advice.


  • Work with standards-defining organizations to understand evolving standards, identify gaps, provide inputs on platform gaps, and contribute to roadmap planning to build world-class user-facing applications.


  • Drive decision-making with team members who have different views on simple to complex problems, synthesizing the best solution based on business requirements.





What do you need to bring




  • Experience: 12+ years of experience building successful production software systems, with 10+ years of mobile development experience.



  • Education: Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.



  • Fundamentals: Solid grounding in computer science fundamentals.



  • Programming Languages: Proficiency in Swift, Objective-C (for iOS), Kotlin, or Java (for Android).



  • Mobile Development Tools: Deep familiarity with mobile development frameworks and tools.



  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to address technical challenges and optimize application performance.



  • Software Engineering Practices: Competent in software engineering tools (e.g., Java build tools) and best practices (e.g., unit testing, test automation, continuous integration, etc.).



  • OOP Proficiency: Strong OOP skills, with the ability to analyze requirements and transform them into scalable software designs.



  • Technical Expertise: Significant business knowledge and technical expertise in consumer-facing mobile application design and architecture, ensuring scalability, performance, and maintainability.



  • Code Quality Advocacy: Serve as a strong advocate for code craftsmanship, good coding standards, and the use of tools that will improve the quality of the delivered code.



  • Development Methodology: Experience using Agile/Scrum methodology for software development.


  • Must be a self-starter, able to work independently or as a team member, and have strong communication skills for interfacing with business partners and technology teams.
