Job Description Summary
The Alvarez lab at the University of Pennsylvania is seeking a Research Specialist A. This is a unique opportunity to engage in cutting edge research at the interface of Organoids, Diabetes, and Regenerative Medicine. The research asks how circadian & metabolic rhythms impact islet maturity, with a long-term goal to build mature stem cell-derived pancreatic islet organoids as human models of islet development & physiology and as novel replacement therapy for insulin-dependent diabetics.
Job Description
The Research Specialist will support studies characterizing pancreatic islets, both derived from human pluripotent stem cells and from mice, in vitro and in vivo. Research methods include: stem cell tissue culture and differentiation, mouse islet preparation, glucose tolerance and insulin secretion assays, analysis of gene expression (by immunohistochemistry, FACS, and RNA-seq), chromatin state (by ChIP, Hi-C, and ATAC), and CRISPR-based gene editing. The research assistant will independently collect and record experimental data and update written protocols and methods based on findings. Other duties will include laboratory setup and maintenance (including equipment), monitoring/ordering supplies, and keeping inventory of laboratory samples.
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree with 0-1 year of related experience in research and clinical study methodologies or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Bachelor's degree in biology or closely related field preferred. The ideal candidate will have past experience in a biological research laboratory. Experience with culturing human pluripotent stem cells including maintenance, expansion and differentiation to various lineages and work with animal models is preferred. Ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment, and strong communication skills are required
